Calif Property Tax & Your C-Dory

I grew up with boats in NH.  As a little kid I never understood why we spent several hours traveling to Maine where my Dad kept the boat stored for the winter.  We had tons of room behind the barn after all.  Yup, you guessed it.  Our ‘Live Free of Die’ state taxed the boat for storage.  Maine did not.

And a tidbit of trivia for which this site is infamous,  Peter Falk, well known sleuth of Columbo,  said one time that he little interest and no experience in TV drama, but that he was recruited for his investigative skills by the producer who had read about his success working for the State of New York collecting taxes that Long Island yacht owners were NOT paying. He also grew up 'messing around boats.' in Northport overlooking Long Island Sound and the Connecticut shore.  He loved problem solving and figuring things out and this give him his first job with the NY Debt. of Revenue.  He became their tax man of Boat Storage. It all started when he began wondering why all of the boats in marinas and all the boats bustling in the bay during the summer just disappeared in the fall and where completely gone over the winters storage. And in the spring they would miraculously reappeared.  You see most Long Island owners avoided paying their New York State 90 day storage ‘fee’ by having their boats dry docked in Connecticut!  I remember reading that in the 2 or 3 years he worked the state he collected over 7 million dollars taxes.

Hi Folks,

For what it is worth.

In Massachusetts I get hit for a boat tax of $25.00 from both Nantucket and Hingham. I only have to pay one. For the Trailer, the tax is $40.00. They seam to think the trailer is worth more than the boat.

My point is that there may not be double taxation.

Last Thursday, I went to the Delta to retrieve my boat and bring it home to Nevada for some improvements. I expect to have the boat here for two about weeks.

I'm hoping the tax man drops by the Delta to see the boat! What a surprise he'll get when they open the storage door.

Bill

They'll probably charge me extra for their travel to see an empty garage!

Anything that would be taxed if you had somebody else do it but decided to do it yourself to save money!

Good idea. Then you could deduct damages caused by your DIY attempts.

Don - you're vicious! I loved it! Very funny!

It probably shouldn't be told, but I will share it with you brats: Montana has a one time registration fee on campers and boats. You pay it once and it is done and done permanently. A couple hundred dollars on the most expensive boats and you have it free for the rest of your life. No sales tax. :D
Last year Montana had money left over so they sent out a check to all the taxpayers. :thup
Strange fact: People leaving California and Washington that move to Montana are slowly changing the state into the same as what they left. Thank God they have a ways to go.

I have lived and started businesses in Sac. Cal. and Pierce County, Wa. The political corruption was so bad we laid off close to 300 employees and left both states. Both states lean so far to the left they are broke and need Obama's handouts. The best days of my life was when I left those two states. I have no intention of ever going back.

Welcome to Montana, but leave Wa. and Cal. ideas behind you, please. :(

Ps
We lived in Montana long before my venture in those two states.

Roger, you've known me long enough to know I don't pick on anybody unless I like them, and I really like my little nephew. In spite of his life long profession and his obsession with Wozniak's products, he has some major redeeming qualities. Patty, Baxter, and the Taproom instantly come to mind, not necessarily in that order.

There are a couple of exceptions of course. Picking on Marines and skimmers who drive or ride around in big gray "Targets" is a built in no maintenance automatic function.

When will politicians learn that if you lower taxes you will increase revenue? I've dealt with California before and if that state would enforce immigration laws and quit being a welfare state for illegal immigrants then maybe they wouldn't have to soak the legal, tax paying residents that live there. Just a thought.
Washington is just as bad. Even for military non residents that are here on orders are required to pay an 8.5% sales tax on the boats they bring into state to use while here. Consequently, they don't buy or use boats here.

Well, Uncle...I like you too! Write tomorrow, if your computer still works after confickr strikes all you who bow down to Redmond! One for the Woz! Patty and Baxter send their regards!

Thank you - I've learned a lot from your responses. The last few months of cruising around a small area of the Delta, I'm astounded at the number of large, rather well kept boats sunk & abandon in the tullies. Charlie's article solved that observation.

The responses relating to California's financial situation and the affect on the state when higher income employee's move out. It's really to bad.

I was born in California myself. I lived in the vicinity of Shattuck & Alcatraz, in Berkeley, when the trolley cars were running up and down Alcatraz Ave. It was beautiful and very neat - not today!

Thanks again,

Bill

I was born in Berkeley about the time Sawdust made Chief in the Navy. Brother went to UC Berkeley 'till the war started and he joined within days of Pearl Harbor. Mother worked at UC Berkeley in the '60's. (Can you say "Forward Under Clark Kerr?"?) Aunt worked for the city council for 20+ years. We have many roots in the Bay area. Yep, Berkeley (and California) has well and truly changed, Bill. Then again so has WA, OR, and any number of States. Funny thing though, our grand kids will some day fondly look back at the "good old days" of life at the turn of the millennium when drinking water was plentiful, recreational fishing was fairly unregulated, taxes weren't too oppressive, and gas was under $10/gallon. (sigh)
