Looks like C-Dory has a few extra Yanmars sitting around...

Boy wouldn't that be KOOL..... a 22 cruiser with about 100 hp. Yanmar inboard outdrive.....sign me up for one.... I have a 30ho Yanmar on my tug and it is by far the best engine I have ever had.... it just does everything well, and what I love best is that I never have to worry about problems...it starts easy, runs and runs and runs....also uses almost no diesel...1qt. an hour.. slow but always gets me there and back.

Dusty, just tell your banker that he ain't seen YOUR BATHTUB! (ie: the Puget Sound and the Great Pacific Ocean!)
 
I trully would never be afraid of bad water in the tug.... it is slow so it might have a rough time with swift current, but it rides so well and feels so solid I know it is safe... Toy ?? OK I guess...it is.. it's fun and before the C-Dory I had planned on taking long trips with it... slow long trips... still might... once I retire it from working.

That CD-22 (25?) might be really nice with the Yanmar moved up in the middle of the cockpit so that the weight would not be all in the stern for better balance, and one could better fish over the transom?

Maybe a jackshaft would be in order? How about a jackshaft and a Hamilton Jet Drive? (Gary?)

Dusty- The first time I saw the C-Ranger 21 I thought it looked like a "Toy Tug" best suited for touring the harbor on Sunday afternoon with a brew in one hand!

It's been my summer job for the last 10 or 12 years.... I do heavy underwater lift... big stuff...anchors that weigh a ton, sometimes more...they are used with log booms, and dock anchors... I install docks, anchors and chain....lots of chain... every summer I usually get about 4 or 5 sinkers.... mostly ski boats with big engines.... filled with drunks that backed off to fast and took a big wave over the stern.... its fun.. and takes some skill.. boats are real fragile when they are filled with water.... I only work on Lake Almanor....and use the tug to move logs, and anchors...fun stuff..
Lots of scuba time..

Agree about the looks, but there are about 600 of these little guys around -- from my very limited experience it will go anywhere a 22 CD would go. Basic design is from a Bristol Bay fishing boat. Slow, sure is, but we've been cruising at 9-10 knots and that's really not bad - and this old cheap guy sure likes 10 nmpg! Got to agree, on the long trips like from here to Ucleulet 10 knots is pokey - but for the shrimp/crab salmon trips just a few more minutes to enjoy the underway fun.

With any luck mine should be here next Tuesday, and then the installation fun begins!! Of course Les may never speak to me again. :lol:

Hey Joe!

I was SERIOUSLY thinking of doing exactly that on my 27'. But when I talked with the guys at Hamilton they told me that it would have cavitation problems due to the flat bottom :( I still don't understand why. But that is what they told me. I'm still tempted to though. I found a used older Hamilton pump for sale that would fit the bill nicely. The biggest problem is that I just don't have enough time to get the work done so I would have to spend a bunch of boat bucks to have a shop do the work.

I've also thought about the Jackshaft. But to do that I would need to pull up the whole floor and remount the tanks. And I have thought about that too. But again. More boat bucks than I can spend right now. :(
 
I agree...that would be the trick with a 27' .... Originally my tug had a 2 cylinder Yanmar.... I pulled that and installed a 30hp 3 cylinder...that I rebuilt....really sold me on Yanmars....neat motors.. I also added 19" to the back of my deck house as the cabin was to small....I still have a large working deck... making the tug perfect for diving.

As long as Dusty isn't in it, :smileo , the bathtub is fine. The world isn't ready for that many wrinkles. My bathtub is in the same category!! :cry

I don't understand why it would cause cavitation..... we had Hamilton drives on our river barges in the navy.... and they worked just fine.... maybe they think the stern bobs out of the water...
The idea of having a 4 cylinder turbo diesel mounted midships really interreges me....kinda like Joe said with a jack shaft.... economy, power and range...plus I love the reliability.... I just look at my Yanmar and say start and it does.... and purrs all day long, never misses a beat.
The 100hp turbo diesel is not that large either... plus it would really make ya scoot...
 
I don't understand the cavitation problem either. But I'm not sure I want to cut a 10" x 12" hole in the bottom of the boat and end up finding out they are right. :shock: Plus, if I were to pick up this used drive I found I'm not sure a Vortec V6 would be enough power. I might have to go with a V8 if I go to the pump. And that would mean removing the tanks and floor and redo everything. Right now I just want to get it running and in the water...
 
Gary I think they are mistaken. Maybe at 40+ a flat hull might have issues with skipping across the water and sucking air in the pump but at speeds that your body can handle I don't think that would be a problem. I bet the 4.3 EFI would push it. probably wouldn't set any speed records but like I've discovered with the 18 it will get up and go a heck of a lot faster than my body is comfortable with on anything rougher than glass smooth.

At this point I am still working 55+ hours a week. We'll get it done asap though. I really want to get it in the water!
