C-Dory with extended roof

Simplicity

New member
We've trailered the boat up to Wisconsin and are about to cruise Lake Winnebago.A C Dory 22 came by and seems to have an extended hard top roof.Does anyone know if that has been offered as a factory option? We didn't see it up close but just curious. In a few days we head for Bayfield and the Apostles. Alan on Simplicity.

Don't think it was ever a factory option. There are several boats that have created a hard top over the cockpit, don't know of any that have made it "one piece" with the cabin roof though. Try to get a picture of it if you can.

Check out Roger's [flrockytop] cantilever aluminum top. Its very nicely built and could have a hardtop instead of canvas . You guys have fun in the cool weather .

i saw a boat on craigslist a while back that was a 22 angler with a 22 cruiser top, if im not mistaken, so it stuck out over the back a bit, it looked factory done, like maybe someone paid a bit extra to have the factory do it when building the boat, it was blue i think..

If you saw it on the road on Thursday and it was blue - that would be ours. I drove the boat from Madison to our slip in Sturgeon Bay on Thursday.

If it was ours, we have the canvas frame that Roger had made for his.

We love it - on our Trent-Severn trip it was always nice to be out of the direct sun or the rain. We had one on our tug and also loved it.

Have a great time in Wisconsin - enjoy Bayfield and the Apostles.

And a final question:

About how much would it cost to have one of these built by a railmaker and covered by a canvas shop (just the roof structure, and not the full enclosure, although that would be nice to know too)?

The lack of struts would sure make fishing with the extended cover a lot easier that having struts running down from the cover to the gunnels!

Thanks!

Hello Robert,

On your recent Trent-Severn cruise, did you trailer BRAZO with the canvas on the frame? If so, did that seem to work out OK?

Thanks to Roger's help, we had ours made at Blue Coral Towers. They made it exactly like Roger's and shipped it to us. The canvas frame was $1300.00 and the actual canvas top (only) was $500.00. I think shipping to Wisconsin was around $150. I installed the canvas frame myself - really not that hard.

I was not able to find anyone close to us that would do the canvas frame. I did get some quotes from around the country and they ranged from $3800 to $5500 just for the frame - crazy numbers compared to $1300.

We made our own full enclosure using Sunbrella Plus and Strataglass - along with the top end thread, zippers, etc - you could do it for less. Our cost was $1100.00 to do it ourselves. The quote to have someone do it for us was $4200.

On the trip to the Trent-Severn (and back) we removed the canvas from the frame. Seeing that we were traveling so far, we just didn't want to take a chance. I don't think it would be a problem leaving it on, but hate to have something off just a bit and cause problems with the canvas. We just reinstalled at the ramp.

When I've trailered the boat from Madison to Sturgeon Bay (abour 3 hour drive) - I've left the canvas on and it has not had any problems.

Thanks for the information Robert. Was the canvas top sourced through Blue Coral and sent as a package (frame + canvas top)? If not, who made the canvas top for you?

When we went to Yellowstone/Lake Powell last year we took our top off from here (Pensacola) to Yellowstone because of the distance. We just left it on when going from Yellowstone to to Powell. It did just fine but I also don't drive but about 50 mph when towing the boat.

Hi David,

Yes, the frame and canvas top was sourced through Blue Coral. They had someone come in and make the canvas top. Blue Coral made the frame just a bit different than Roger's because they did not have the boat.

How far was the frame shipped for the $150?

It would be great to have someone like Bluye Coral build it, as they already have the plans, measurements, templates, etc.

What would it cost to send it across from the East Coast to the West Coast, and would it stand much of a chance arriving intact? (Not bent up!)

We could do no better than about a 50% average in getting a sailboat mast from San Diego or Los Angles to the Bay Area, so we started bring them up ourselves during trips for regattas. Seems the forklift operators liked to run over them, even though we wrapped the outside paper tubes with spiral red tape, etc!

I really like these shade covers without the support arms that are typically found on most Bimini tops that interfere with fishing and getting into and out of the boat.

I need to stay out of the sun as much as possible, after 33 years of racing sailboats. Dr.'s Orders!!!

Don't need side coverings here on Lake Shasta. I have them on my SeaRay, but leave them rolled up most all year long. No no-see-ems, almost no mosquitoes, and the cabin of both boats is plenty adequate in size without a second enclosed area, plus both boats are in covered moorage.

Hi Joe,

I'm not exactly sure on the $150 - but very close to that number. Blue Coral http://www.bluecoraltowers.com is in Pensacola, Florida and we are in Madison, WI -- about 1000 miles.

They packaged the frame very carefully and we had no dents/scratches/etc. They made a minor modification to the frame that allowed it to be shipped easier (the support arms are hinged).

They did an awesome job on our canvas frame - very professionally done - not just straight work, it actually has a nice style to it. I worked with Roland from Blue Coral - I'm guessing that he is the owner(850-453-0330). Roland followed up with me a few times to see how the install went - he was first reluctant to do the frame without the boat, but after e-mailing them a number of times they agreed to do it. His concern was how close the fit on the boat would be when I installed it -- it was basically perfect fit.

Thank You, Robert, for the excellent and thoughtful response!

I'll follow up with it!

The two boats pictured are 2007 and 2008 models, I think with the high top roof (?) Does anyone know of any differences between those boats and my 1987 Cruiser (with a normal height top) that would make the fit of the tube structure or canvas cover fit my boat different than those discussed? Robert? Roger? Marc? Anyone?

Thanks, All!

I'm not sure of the difference in other boat years. There is one other CD 22 here in town. I'm not sure of the year and do not think he is on the list. I will try and make contact with him. He would probably be agreeable to let Roland make some measurements.

The thought just came to me. When is the next CD gathering? Maybe someone could look for the differences in years of the boats that are there.

Roger

I thought I would resurrect this 18-month old thread to ask:
1) has anyone else done a top like this?
2) if Roger (C-Lover) and Robert (Brazo) were going to do it again, would you make any changes to the design?
3) Would any design difference be necessary to fit our 2006 (with low roof) instead of your 2007 and 2008 (with high roof)?
We originally thought a conventional bimini top was best for us, but after going through a couple design options we are looking at your canvas frames again as a real possibility for us.
Thanks.
