C-Dory model

A friend has ordered a half model of a certain Foss tug and I was wondering if anyone has attempted a C-Dory model or half model? There used to be some decent line drawings on the old C- Dory web site but I haven't checked lately. Roger

not seen one but custom ones would be available, Cruising World usually has an ad for a company doing half models of popular boats. What I'd like is a 24 inch scale model with remote control. George

It would be easy to do a full model in balsa wood, with some frames. You can buy small outboards which are electric or gas to power the boat. There seem to be less of these now, than there were 20 to 30 years ago.

As for a half model--even easier I have made half models of some of the sail boats my father and I have owned. I have used solid bass wood, but there are other woods which are easily worked. For most models you don't need scale plans, just a good eye can do it, along with the basic dimensions, pulled off a photo.

I had a friend who made a one off copy of a fatty Knees dinghy, 1" scale, and then made a mold and produced a number of hulls, finished with teak rails etc for his friends who owned or had owned these dinghies. The same could be done with the C Dory hull, if there was enough of a demand, but the price might be high because of the labor of both buliding the mold and boat parts.

Good winter project for someone who has the time!

For those C-Brats fortunate to attend the Chesapeake Bay Gathering in 2010, Doug Baxter of Anne-B made a C-Dory model for each boat attending. It may not be an exact scale model, but the likeness is excellent and it looks great in my den. I haven't talked to Doug since the gathering in June, maybe if he could be talked into making additional models.

I have some line drawings copied from the old C-Dory factory site.

Interesting idea...we bought a model lifeboat from a gallery in Paia, Maui a couple of years ago from this guy:
http://www.konradships.com/yacht/

But wow! The cheapest thing on that site now is $2,900! Ours is smaller and was a few hundred.

So...I was wondering...is there an opportunity for a small C-dory / C-Brat e-store? I recently bought a steering wheel boss from Dave McKibben (Anna Leigh), and if there were a model available, that's...um two items. Oh wait, with the calendar that's three items!

In particular, I was thinking that these items would be great to feature on the factory site (along with whatever fleeces, etc they have). Think about it...someone can't afford to buy a C-Dory (yet!) but they could buy a model for...$200? With the color stripe that they want? Even put a name on it? Would also be something that would be quite eye-catching at...boat shows. <grin>

I've also seen some folks who did curtains, and other projects like racks.

I have nothing to contribute to the store - my handiwork skills are ghetto at best - but...it struck me as an interesting idea. Of course, I have lots of ideas....

Several years ago I had a custom model of a deHavilland Beaver (aircraft) constructed for a good friend's retirement.

I located the maker via an ad in an aviation magazine (the actual carvers were somewhere in southeast asia). Interestingly, the only item I was able to furnish of this particular aircraft were three color photo's. The resulting model was museum-grade and the final cost was less than $100.

Over the years I have seen many military aircraft model's being sold in military exchanges, so I know they're still being made.

Check some aviation magazines - I expect you'll find an assortment of ads. If these carver's can do complex military aircraft, a C-Dory should be fairly easy.

Best,
Casey

A one inch to foot scale model would be very cool no doubt.
With some time and a nice block of clear cedar it could be done. BUT, where am I gonna find a couple little tiny Honda 40's? Anyone ever hear of model outboards?

Dan
