C-Dory 25 Repowering to Honda 140 Recommendations

Hello -

Our old Honda 135 has a cracked head so we just ordered a new Honda 140. I am looking for prop recommendations. Additionally, does anyone know if the prop from our old 2005 Honda 135 is compatible with the spline on the new 140?

We have a 3x14 1/4x15 ss (r)

Thanks,

The current prop should work fine on the 140. Most owners are increasing the HP to the 175 or 200 on the 25' C Dory. It will be interesting to see what your speed and fuel economy will do with the new Honda 140 hp engine. There is no change in displacement from the old.

How many hours did you get on the 135? What was the reason to repower?

Thanks

Dr. Bob,

Nice to hear from you! You actually looked at our boat in Pensacola after our unfortunate incident with the marina nearly sinking our boat. Well, the boat is now in Minnesota as are we and our days on the ICW and Pensacola Bay watershed will be limited for the foreseeable future. However, we have quite a bit of water up here in Minnesota. The boat will live on Lake Minnetonka for now and eventually move up to Lake Superior in the next few years once our kids are big enough to manage a 4 hour one way commute.

Anyway, we went with a smaller displacement motor because our five year boat plan doesn't really include any large passages, fully weighted down adventures or ocean currents. Like most things we tried to make a purchase that fit our needs and for hull speed cruising on the lake and Mississippi River in a lightly packed boat with our two small kiddos. We figured that the 140 would suit our needs.

We only had 683 hours on the 135, pretty devastating and unexpected. We spoke to a boat mechanic and he said the issues we were experiencing was do to a cracked head. He also said a rebuild would be close to 10k and the 140 was just over 13.

I expect that the boat will have similar economy (5mpg) and a likely cruising speed of around 18-20 MPH just a bit over what our 135 would do in ideal conditions. Thank you for your input on the propeller!

Thanks,
R&R

I agree with your analysis of the speed, since I had a 130 Honda on my first 2003 C Dory 25. I had investigated switching to the Suzuki 140 that I have on my Caracal. My assessment was that the difference would be minimal. My experience using the smaller 130 Honda in Alaska with a heavily loaded boat and 2 persons aboard was very close to your projected mileage and speeds. We cruised a lot at 6 knots or at 17 knots. As the fuel and water went down, we would up the planing speed up by a knot.

You all are getting 5mpg at 20 mph? I'm getting about half that on my 2007 25' c-dory with a Honda 130. What am I doing wrong?

My 5 mpg was at displacement speed. About half of that when on a plane. Overall for the trip: about1200 miles and average was about 3.5 mpg.
