c-dory 22 seating only configuration

Are there any members that have the C-Dory 22 with the seating only configuration? I wanted to get some thoughts on how well this set up works. I checked out a 22 cruiser with the usual dinette/galley set up at Cutter last year and needless to say, it was a bit tight in the cabin with my three kids. First post, love this site!

Hi Dan--- Welcome aboard! The C-Dory design you are looking for I think was called a 22' Sport, it was all seats on both sides and open at the back, and I thought a perfect design, especially for day trips, or fishing groups, it would also make a good Florida boat. I went to the factory and inspected one, but when I put in my order they had already discontinued the model. I think maybe 6 were built. I contacted Jeff about a special order and he told me that that model would not be built again. You can possibly find one used in the S.F. Bay area. I know that the C-Dory dealer in N.H. was looking for one also, you may want to contact him.-----Good Hunting ---Rich

Dan – welcome to the site, glad to have you aboard. Many members have done extensive customization of their boats. Wayne McCown did a fantastic job of adding extra seating for his family on their 22' cruiser Little Mac. Below is a picture of the completed job. His photo album is HERE and the sub album Dinette to Sofa Conversion shows the different stages of his modification.

Welcome aboard Dan,
If you look at page 2 of the photo album for "Fish Tales" you will see what he has done. He has converted his dinette into a luxurious couch. This provides considerable more seating space. Several others have done likewise, although I don't recall who.

C-Dory used to offer an option on the 22 Cruiser of having no dinette and no galley with bench seating on both sides. They even had a blurb on their site about needing to do both or neither for balance. That doesn't seem to be offered anymore.

dan, Someone on this site did a remodel in which they cut the sink/countertop low, moving the sink/stove to the level of the the wood base on the seats. Some kind of cover went over that, and then cushions for a bench where the sink/stove used to be.

I have seen pics of that seats only, sport model. It just had a bench seat where the sink and stove are now.

Well, looking back I guess it was "BC's" , "Sunken Sink" that I saw. You can check his photo album. basically, he sunk the sink down so a formica-like cover could go over it when not in use. I guess you could do the same with the appropriate stove, then put some cushions and fold down foot treadles...

Hi Dan,

I have a '98 22 Cruiser with the factory installed seating configuration you're thinking about. I believe there were very few built. It's a very basic design; Two seats facing forward, and directly aft of each seat is a bench seat. Under each forward facing seat is an enclosed locker, and under each bench seat (the seat lifts up) is a giant storage area. Plus, there is an enclosed footrest for each bench which lifts up for additional storage. For most of our boating on the river, this is perfect for us.

For the occasions when we want to do weekend overnighters or a week's vacation, I had a local cabinet guy build a small counter with a small stainless sink. By removing the forward facing seat on the port side, the counter rests on the seat platform and is secured to the v-berth bulkhead. Thus, the counter runs from the bulkhead to the edge of the bench seat. Our fresh water consists of a few 1 gallon jugs. The sink drains into a bucket inside the locker below. I can make this conversion in a matter of 10 minutes, so we're not locked into a permanent installation. For cooking, we use a 2 burner Coleman camp stove and a Magma grill outside. The arrangement is very basic, but that's ok. We're pretty basic kinds of people, and consider ourselves lucky that we were able to get into a C Dory in the first place. This program works very well for us. However, if we were going to do some long-term cruising, I'm sure we'd be looking for something a little more sophisticated.

I"d post some pictures for you, but the JONI LYNN is tucked away under canvas, tarps and what-not for her long Wisconsin winter's nap in the back of the machine shed. Pics will have to wait until spring.

Hope this helps in your decision making.

You folks need to check out the "Luna C" photo album. In my mind this is truly the best of both worlds! The vessel has the sunken galley...(sink and stove), that is hidden under a panel topped with seat cushion. Thereby providing plenty of seating. The whole galley is lowered to the height of the helm seat platform. If I'm not mistaken the factory built this in this manner for its' owners.

Dan:

If you are interested in construction details on my "dinette to sofa conversion" project, let me know.

You will also find in my album photos of related projects, for creating a second double bed or bunk beds in the cabin, as well as using the galley top + helm seat for another (child's) bed.

Wayne/Lil Mac: Way cool. Man.... I bet SENSEI wishes I had that set up when we just made the Thanksgiving TN Cumberland River Cruise... He attempted to sleep a 5 gallon bucket on a 3 gallon shelf so to speak.

Roger.... would this set up not been sweet!!

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but does anybody have any more info on the 22 with the seating only configuration. It seems perfect for my family of 5. Any pictures would be great.
