C-Dory 16 Cruiser Performance with a 50 HP 4 stroke

Hello,

I'm looking at C-16 Cruiser with a 50HP 4 stroke and was wondering what the top speed is with 1 person? 2 people? 3? 4? What's the max load on this boat? I remember someone mentioning that they had a 40 HP 4 stroke on theirs and it could barely plane off with more than 2 people in it. How sensitive is it to loading issues? Thanks for any info on this.

There are others who can tell you more in detail, but I had a 16' cruiser with a Yamaha 50 and it was a perfect match with one or two persons. Three was pushing it, unless the third was light. The 16'er is sensitive to loading and it was always better to keep weight forward. My Yamaha was equipped with a permatrim that made a huge difference in performance.

My 16 with the honda 50 would do 30 mph most of the time, and near sea level. With 2 on, about 27-28. I have had 4 aboard and it dropped down to around 22 or so. The engine wouldn't make full rpm so a lower pitch would have probably helped if carrying large loads.
 
I have a Yamaha 50 4 stroke. Issue is getting it propped right for full rpms. I went through 3 props to get it right. I can hit 24 knots at 5700, but it better be FAC or I will beat myself and the boat to death if there is chop of any height at that speed.

I normally run at about 3700 rpm and make about 12-14 kts. The best is that I get about 5-6 mpg at that speed. At 3000 - 3300 I get closer to 7 mpg!
 
I run at 4500 rpm and with a 60hp Yamaha I average around 19-22 knots with 2 onboard. The fastest I have had the boat is 29 knots on flat water with one onboard. I am carrying 18 gallons of fuel and an 8 hp kicker.
 
Cachita had a 50hp Suzuki & I ran it @4500 rpm with 1-2 people aboard. Cruising speed averaged around 15-20kts depending on tides/currents. With flat waters (rare), I could run 5500-6000 rpm @ about 27-29kts with an average load. I carried about 15 gallons fuel & had a 6hp Suzuki kicker. Above 5000 rpm, engine noise got a bit too loud to hear well or listen to the radio.
 
We have a heavy 16 but can still get 22 mph upwind/upriver and 27 mph average downwind/downriver. This is with 2 small people, 2 beagles, and a lot of gear. Adding a third person limited us to 14-18 mph. We also have a Permatrim and trim tabs.
