C-Brats biggest loser

Well on Feb 3rd in the "preventive maintenance" thread I mentioned that I had started exercising and losing some weight. I noted I had lost 14 lbs and was still headed down. It's up to 19lbs lost as of this AM and I anticipate that I will have lost about 20 lbs by the weekend. It helps me to brag/talk about this as it provides extra motivation to keep up some good habits.

Joyce has decided to diet now too - so we are both on the South Beach diet for awhile (I need to be supportive of her). I'm up to about 4 miles a day running/walking and am now averaging 4 miles in less than 50 mins. My current short term goal is to wake up at less than 185 three days in a row. After that, I reward myself with a 1 hour massage at Spa Nordstrom.

My first "reward" came in early Feb after I had run 100 miles. After I'm down to 185, the next target for a reward is 3 days under 175. After that, I hope to be in maintenance mode and to just hold the weight there.

As I mentioned before, I'm looking for others who want to be "C-Brats biggest loser". I'm willing to start with my weight today of 186. It can't hurt for a little friendly competition to start around this. Post today's (or tomorrow's) weight and we'll do a weigh in at Friday Harbor, Neah Bay and the SBS boat show party in 2009. The winner at each stage will be rewarded with a nice bottle of wine. The winner in Jan 2009 will earn the title "C-Brat's Biggest Loser" and a hat or something similar with that title on it. Scout's honor on the starting weight. I'll buy the awards.

Anyone up for the challenge?

Congratulations on your accomplishment. 10 years ago I lost 135 pounds and I would do any thing to keep her from coming back!!!

You cracked me up with that one!

Roger - I did mine over a year ago. Went from 195 to 180 in three weeks, then about 2½ lbs a week until I was down to 165. Didn’t go on any particular kind of diet, just quit eating so much. I eventually got down to 162 but was hungry too much of the time so decided to settle on 168 to 170. Been there for close to a year, except during holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving. Then I balloon up to 175 for a few days.

Do not and did not exercise, (it is against my religion) haven’t done any kind of exercise since I got out of the army in 1962.

I think what you are doing is a good idea and I would be willing to contribute to a prize for the winner.

Congratulations Roger!

I'm sure you're feeling better physically and about yourself mentally, too!

Just one word of caution: be careful of the impact of running and it's effect on your knees, hips, and back, etc.

I started running in 1976 and worked my way up to 6 miles every other day and my weight down from 192 to 168 a the lowest. Then, after eight years, my knees and hips started to bother me, so I had to quit in 1984, and the pains went away at that point.

I started having pains again in the late 1990's in my knees and hips. Arthritis had been accelerated by the impact of running. I'm having a hip replacement next month. My back may require surgery later this year. While my family history predisposes me to arthritis, I'm sure the running has brought it on prematurely and more severely.

Run on soft surfaces and in moderation with the best of running shoes. If you have a family history of arthritis, be very careful to monitor your running. The damage may only show up years later.

I know you are aware of these warnings because of your professional training, but I thought I'd offer them for all to hear.

Good Luck with your program!

Joe. :teeth :thup

Way to go Roger

Agree with Joe on the running. I too used to run six miles a day. Also climbed a 500 foot hill most everyday with a heavy pack and lifted weights. Did this up untill I was 50. Then had back problems brought on by I think too much extreme exercise. No longer do the things I needed to be in that kind of shape. Thank goodness for the C-Dory and its ability to take Jo-Lee and I in the same remote type places without the need to be extremely fit, so still get the mental rejuvenation these areas provide.

This winter found myself up to 215 and my jeans no longer fitting, (way to much time sitting in front of this computer) so no running but am giving the elliptical a good work out and eating less but healthier food. Have lost 10 lbs already and hope to be back to my feel just right weight of 185 by end of May.

Seems Oldgrowth Dave's busy lifestyle between the farm and all his other activities provides him with all the exercise he needs and them some.

Good going, RB. I thought you looked kinda scrawny at the SBS. But I figured it was because I have gained about 15 pounds since the first of the year when I quit smoking.

I'm at 210, aiming for 'under 180', or maybe 'under 175'.

Several months ago I picked up a Health Rider in almost-new condition at Goodwill. It had been priced at $15 --> $10 --> $5 --> $1, so I brought it home. I figured if we didn't like it I'd just give it back!

You sit on a seat like a bicycle, and then either pull back on the handlebars, push on the foot peddles, or both. This action uses your body weight as resistance to raise the seat. There is a 2nd foot position that makes the work more strenuous. You can pull higher or lower, faster or slower, and can alternate to emphasize shoulder/arm or leg exercise. No electricity, no noise, no bells and whistles, no stress on the joints. So far I'm quite impressed with it. I see them regularly at Goodwill, so I'd look there before considering a new one.

PS: I'm not necessarily looking for 'awards' or 'trying to win' (in fact, I'm trying to 'lose'). But I'd be glad to accept a bottle of wine if it works out that way. However, this came at the right time for me, and I figured that writing this goal out, and announcing it, makes it more 'real'. Good idea Roger!

I started Slim Fast in September 2003 then South Beach in January 2004 lost 60+ pounds. Have tended to keep most of it off but I am still no where near my Marine Corps discharge weight in 1970. Wife also does South Beach so it makes it easy even when dining out.

That said weight loss made hip replacement in March 2004 and corrective L4/5 back surgery in November 2006 a lot easier.

Got a rescue Golden Retriever 2 weeks after back surgery as my "therapy dog". First walk for me was from car to the picnic bench in the park about 50 feet - -took a while but got back to making 2 mile walks without incident although time usually limits to a mile or so morning and night every day sun or infrequent rain.

OK Ed -you're on the list and at least it's a challenge now.

BTW - I'm still going down. Woke up under 185 today for the first time in years. Also my clothes were starting to get too loose and I did another thing that I haven't done in years - bought 2 new pairs of blue jeans with a waist size SMALLER than the previous pair. I can't remember when (if ever) I did that before. Also replaced a lot of my size large shirts with mediums today. Haven't done that for like.......... ever.

Bill-

I'm in much the same position you were in.

Have to have steroid injections in my back in the next few weeks followed by hip replacement. Will then decide on L5 back surgery advisability.

Unfortunately, I'm up to 230 lbs because of lack of exercise and over indulging. Will have to work on weight loss very seriously, especially after becoming able to exercise again after hip surgery.

No question about the need for hip and probability of back surgery. Otherwise I'll have to give up all three of my boats due to inability to get down to themin marinas! There's motivation in that!

Congratulations to C-Brat Losers and Quitters! I love it! Just before I got this 'behind the desk full time' gig, I started an exercise regimen of 1-hour aerobics at least 4 times a week. In 4 months I lost 35 pounds...packed some of it back on now, because I'm not exercising...but I'll get back at it...you have to WANT it to make it work...Go get em!

Roger, congrats on going down. It take planning, effort and determination. I would second Joe's concerns about running and joint wear. I too was a runner, but time and distance took it's toll. Then way to many years working nights living on half the sleep I should have been getting, and rarely getting the exercise I needed I am, (we are) getting back into a regular exercise pattern. Changing how much I eat, and when and how regular has helped, and the motivation of getting up to the end of the belt. I am going the right way now, and it does feel better. Count me in on the challenge, but out on the wine, (WM coupons are fine :idea ) I was at 285, my all time max and down 10 # now, and still working on it. Thanks for the challenge, the format, and the competition. This C-Brat community is good for much more than just boating together.

roger put me down on the list. I was 185 in 95 when I discharged from the corps and stayed that way until I moved up north in 2002. With a year back in school and a few years driving truck and now this deck job for a year Iam am up to 220. Now I have been at 220 for two years and it's the heaviest I have been in my life and I don't really like it. So I will see you at the next weight in. I would tell you what susan weights so she can play to but I like sleeping here.

I don't think I'd be the winner (or big loser), but I weighed 155-160 for years. Then about 8 yrs ago (50) it began creeping up steadily. There seem to be age boundary demarcations where one's metabolism just changes to a different speed...? When I hit 180 recently, that did it -- I bought a new scale -- didn't help.

So I've started eating less, actually waiting till I felt empty or fairly hungry instead of when the clock said it's time. Also eating in smaller portions more times during the day, dipping vegies for snacks, eating less surgary items, etc. Plus I have an older total gym I dusted off and have been using for the past month. I'm down to 173 so far, goal is about 165-168.

My motivation is health, easier on the knees, don't want to buy new clothes especially my Wetsuit, and most of all I love volleyball, season starts in about 4 weeks.

OK - it looks like we have several "entrants" in this "game". So that others can enter at any time and to make it fair to all, I'll state some more formal rules.

1) Enter at any time by stating your weight on a given day. We will assume that this is a "scouts honor" weight.
2) We will do weigh ins for all participants at some C-Brat gatherings. Weights will be done with clothing on and shoes off. Participants can weigh clothes separately (prior to the event) to get a good estimate of the clothing weight. We'll subtract that to get your "naked weight" or NW . Estimated NW will be used to determine awards. I'll bring a scale to all the C-Brat gatherings I attend. At present, I'm planning to attend Friday Harbor, Neah Bay and the SBS in 2009. I may make it to other events also. Other participants can bring a scale also so we can calibrate relative to each others.

3) Awards will be given in two categories:
a) Most weight lost since entering and the factory gathering in 2009
b) Most weight lost per unit time (this will allow others to enter later and still win a prize).

For the "Most weight lost per unit time" award, we will take the weight lost and divide by the number of days in the "game" to get pounds lost/day. Since its easy to lose a couple of pounds in a very short period of time, to be eligible for the "Most weight lost per unit time" award, you must be in the game for at least 1 month.

So far, this is my understanding of who the current entrants are:
(name) (date entered) starting weight
Roger (SeaDNA) Feb 12th 186lbs
Jay (Hunkydory) Feb 13th 205lbs
Ed(Iggy) Feb 14th 210lbs
Harvey(Sleepy C) Feb 16th 275lbs
Tom (SusanE) Feb 16th 220lbs
Steve (Dora Jean) Feb 16th 173lbs

So let me know if I left anyone off or added someone who doesn't really want to be in the game. For extra motivation, I'll provide an extra award at the SBS factory gathering 2009 for everyone one who loses 20lbs or more. Award TBD but it will be something nice.

Roger, sign me up.
I was 127 lbs. when I was discharged in '68. I was 168 when I got married in '82. Bad back, one knee replacement later, I top off at 220 lbs.
I need a challenge. Thanks

Allan

Roger, you can disqualify me if you like cause it looks like I'm sandbagging, but I bought 'another' new scale this weekend, my last 'new' digital scale was too cheap I guess, it has read +/- 10 lbs somedays! This scale so far, 2 days in a row, has read 180.0 lbs (NW) for me. This corresponds to our fancy calibrated work scale with sliding weights, about 185. Now the challenge is a bit more for me... :x
