Byrdman Heading Down US Eastern Coast

Well, not on my C-Dory, or Rozy RF-246, , but rather helping a friend bring his 44' Kadey Krogen down the eastern coast, around/thru FL, up/over to Mobile Bay, up the TN river to Joe Wheeler state park. In Annapolis right now..and will remain here over night. We are still dock nice, safely and secure here in Annapolis MD...and watching ol Danny boy for a bit more. We plan as of crew this morning to just wait here where we know we are good..... about another 12-18 hours and just watch the storm. Then, we will make a call around 5am based on storm news update our next ...or first move... Looks like a full day at the helm can get us down to a nice marina in the Deltaville, VA area, ICW MM 134 area....about a 80 mile run....which is a good 10-11 hours at the helm in this vessel. So, if the weather checks out, we will toss lines just as we can see outside, and prior to true dawn ..... and get underway. We are itching to get going, but, also mindful of the bad things that can happen too... 6am + 11 hours helm time = 1700 or 5pm, giving us just a bit over 2 hours of daylight left for tieing up at the marina. Will post more later...and may just move to www.heartland246.com blog page for a log-a-long/blog...

You can post the link below and check at your leisure our progress...or lack there of for the rest of today...and in the morning. Not sure how well the wireless will work enroute, but, generally, SPOT works pretty good as long as we have a shot at the skies!! When posting the link below,....be sure that all the characters transfer..as some computers the word wrap kicks in...and does not copy the last 6-8 characters.....and you get a bad web site report rather than the tracking map. The last characters are..... cp1Cjf3qX

Best to all of you,...and truly looking forward to this trip.

..but now...traveling on DARLING...

Sounds like a great trip. Would love to be doing that run.

Tried SPOT and it returns an error report which is not a word wrap problem. Have your SPOT link from another post of yours and lined them up. The link posted in your message above is missing a "?" in the character string after viewspots. If I put that in, I get to the right page. Here is the corrected link:

Once I got to the right SPOT web page and can see your travels, or at least, the travels of your SPOT, it looks that you have been doing quite a bit of travelling lately!

Enjoy the trip.

Jim

Pat, didn't think early enough but you're about 10 miles from us right now, we coulda come out and given you an escort for a few miles....

Maybe next time. Duck into Reedville instead of Deltaville if you read this in time, a lot closer. You're running out of light!

life is good and the travel has been great so far. thanks for the notes. we have been making good rate of travel and wow is the only word to describe some of the views. passed by Ft. Monroe, VA yesterday around noonish...and it was much more enjoyable looking at the sea wall from the helm we use to run on each morning...at dawn.... rather than doing the running. Took a picture...then turned to port, passed the big gray ships with white numbers... teared up a bit... just thinking how blessed we are to live in America...and be FREE. or...taxed...but still can run about as we please. In Great Bridges, VA this moring enjoying the sunrise, waiting for the 830 am bridge opening after the rush hour(s)....and glad I am at the helm rather than behind the stearing wheel...

Thanks for the correction on SPOT. Did a cut-n-paste...but, appears not a good one. I appreciate the help guys.

Byrdman heading south...down the ICW.

Byrdman, Know it will be some time before you and your friends reach Wheeler but thought I would make contact now and offer any help that you may need on arrival. Being another "Auburn" man, C-Brat and lover of this river area, I thought I can't go wrong offering help. I live 10 miles by boat and thirteen miles by car from the Wheeler docks and am there almost every day. A friend just moved his 52' Jay Benford designed homebuilt Friday Harbor Ferry to the new slips at Wheeler. If you need any foot work prior to arrival or transportation and such on arrival just give me a call.
I am looking forward to meeting you and feel that I have through C-Brats. Feel free to call my cell (256) 318-4608 at any time if I can be of assistance to you or your friends. Look forward to more post on your trip.

Ron, Marc...and others: Thanks for the notes and offers.

Well....I have to say the prime rib was awesome at Coinjock Marina in NC last night on the ICW.... Tonight, tied to the marina here at the Dowry Creek Marina. Wednesday, should put us in the Beaufort, NC area... weather and tides permiting. Great trip for sure.

Marc: Yes, the oysters in East Point are on our schedule for sure.... these guys up here want $2+ for EACH oyster....which is about 1/2 price if I was the one with the rake in my hand.....so...I look forward to hitting Apalachicola area...and we may just have to hire the guy to bring his cooler, wife and her Budwiser down to the docks....for a good sunset.

Planing is day at a time with mother nature in charge. We only move at 7 knots...unless the tides and winds are against us...so, each evening, we make the call for the next days "possible landings"....then, make a call based on how we are feeling and the weather. So far so good with several long good mileage days under our belt. The weather has not hurt us at all..in fact, yesterday with the "wind tides"...ran at 7 knots at about 1350 rpm on the John Deere just making diesel as we headed south. Beautiful sunset and the moon is just awesome tonight.

On the water at about 7am in the morning. Good night. See some C-Brats/Rozy friends in the Beaufort, NC area on Wednesday night if all goes well.

Brigner...are you alive man? No smoke signals from you.

Rick & Donna.... drug a lure a bit today..but no bites.... They are starting to make fun of me for having to buy all our food now...so, maybe our "local gulf waters" will be a bit kinder. It is fun.

Hi Byrdman,

I wish I were with you. A trip up or down the ICW is something special. I like it almost as good as the Erie Canal. My favorite area is crossing Florida. If you have a chance call at the Martian Marina in Clewiston. The Clewiston Inn will pick you up at the marina and take you to the Inn. Be sure to drink one in their funky bar. The food on the buffet was good the last time we were there last winter.

If you talk with last Dance Terry tell him I will see him in January.

Keep us all up to date on your trip.

Fred, Pat, and Mr. Grey(the cat)

Pat,

Are you planning on stopping in Beaufort, SC? Marcia and I will be in the area by tomorrow afternoon and would like to touch base if it works out.

I'll PM my cell.

Nick: Enjoyed our chat... Myrtle Beach tonight for sure. We may take a land day for crew rest and provisions for the boat. Just watch SPOT. Just made the Cape Fear River area..... and this is a sweet area.. Folks with tents set up on some inlet beaches for the weekend.... floating bait boats/shops and the like.

Ron: Passed your offer along to Buck and Haldine, owners of DARLING and they said many, many thanks. For sure will be in touch....but as you stated...it will be a spell.

Actually had some sunshine today!!! YeeeeeHaaaaa!

Byrdman,

Your Spot shows that you are in Georgetown tonight. Is that correct? If so, it looks like we'll be gone before you hit Beaufort. If we can't get together, we both wish you a great trip!

Good Day Brother Nick...and others.

Nick, I got up this morning after reading your post...paused, went to the roof of the boat, clicked my hills 3 times.... and you and SPOT were both correct.... I was in Georgetown.... Not sure how to make SPOT say I am somewhere I am not...but hey... that may be a real worth while feature at times in life. ...Grin... :beer

We are on approach to Charleston for the night. ICW MM 470 area.
Tuesday, shooting for Port Royal Landing... ICW MM 539 area.
Wednesday by about 1430-1530: Thunderbolt is our target for some parts and maintenance work prior to dark if the technicians are around. If not...then Thursday... So... till the maintenance work is done on the vessel... we will hold up in Thunderbolt.
