butane for butane stove

Anchorout's suggestion can be done, with both butane and propane. Actually LPG which many large cylinders are, is a mixture of propane and butane. Both can be decanted--and this is common practice on cruising boats in foreign lands where there are incompatible fittings or size of tanks.

BUT, you have to be extremely careful (and you should be with any volatile explosive gas) that the area where you do this is out of doors. If you leak any of the material, it is actually illegal (done all of the time when big tanks are refilled... however...)

The problem would be making an adaptor for this small canisters. They are made for a very few uses, and the consequence of a leaking seal at the exit fitting is a fire, explosion or burn if the seal fails or leaks! I would strongly advise against doing this.

Many Asian cooks do Wok type cooking at the table, and use these butane canisters for those small single burner stoves. They are also used in some "food warmers" as "Sterno" was used in the past (and still is in some places).

Just a few thoughts:
#1 The small butane cookers are now banned in Australia. There have been accidents as you can overheat the gas cylinder if you use too large a pan or pot.
#2 Here is a link to CanCookers site where they sell a dual fuel model that uses the 1 lb propane as well as the small butane cans/tanks -

#3 I use a butane model cooker myself but always with a small pan or pot that does not overhang the right side of the unit. I get two to three meals from a canister.
#4 I have the refill adapter for the 1 pound propane tanks - it is a bit more complicated than it might look - lots of DYI videos on this one.
I like the composite propane bottle running a small propane stove out side the best, the tanks do not rust - there were some issues with one brand but the newer ones are all OK.

In Mexico butane is common, and you can often see campers and trailers with black streaks on the sides from the heaters....yes, butane does produce lots more heat but it also carbons much more.... no problem with those small cookers but I sure don't want it running in my heater.

Yeah, the couplings are pretty common with campers, hunters and even boaters around here. I got my fitting at Harbor Freight but I see them at Farm Supply and RV stores. Works for me.
