Bulkheads

I just did the first drill into a bulkhead on the Aft Cabin Door bulkhead. I noticed on my 1999 22" Cruiser, it felt like there was a hard layer though which I was drilling and a soft core into which th balance of the bit pentrated.

I expected a solid core of marine grade plywood. Boy am I showing my age? What did they build these bulkheads out of in the 1999 era? Felt like a glass shell with a fill underneath. I'm mounting the fire extinquishers and did a test screw with a #10 screw into the unknown surface and it seemed to grab well. But have to know the grab is only the first 1/16th or 1/18th of the bulkhead based on my drill experience.

Any input most appreciated.

This forum is GREAT!

Thanks for your help!

The aft bulkhead is balsa cored. The decks and hull bottom are balsa cored. To my knowlege only the transom has plywood core in it--and it may not go across the entire transom. There may be some areas with cleats bolted thru them which are plywood cored--they should be--but I have found in my boats it is all balsa.

If there is a question about the screw holding--see my posts on drilling out a hole, putting in epoxy filler and then screwing into that.
