Bulkhead door lock

I apoligize if this thread has posted twice. I didn't think it got thru the first time.

Has anyone had trouble with the rear bulkhead door lock on a CD22?

Since day one, I've had trouble locking the door. Sometimes I would go weeks without a problem and then spend 20 minutes trying to lock the door.
The slide engages the door frame plate and doesn't seem to be hanging up but the key only turns half way in the lock. The inside locking knob also only turns half way, thus keeping the lock from locking.

I bought the boat in March new , so I think this should be a warranty thing.
I didn't bring it in sooner since its a minor problem and I didn't want to give up any potential water time.

I'm taking the boat out of the water and bringing it to Cutter Marine for winterization/ 100hr service and then winter storage. Even though they are no longer a CD dealer, maybe C Dory will allow them to work on this problem under warranty?
I'll call CD tomorrow.

Any suggestions would be helpfull. Thanks

I had a running battle with the door lock for many months. Be glad the problem only happens when you try to lock the door because it once happened when I couldn't UNlock the door!

I couldn't lock the door about 75% of the time and the "problem" in my case was traced to a defective plastic part. Since there are no lock parts to be had, C-Dory graciously replaced the entire lock under warranty. Since replacement, it's happened on one or two occasions and only in the lock cycle. I have learned a couple of "tricks" that work about 99% of the time.

1) Make sure, when you unlock the door, return the key to the vertical position before removing it.

2) Firmly shut the door before attempting to lock, and if you feel any resistance at all, stop - "unlock", open the door - make sure the inner lock actuator is in the full open position, then firmly shut the door and try again. Resistance is futile. so ya gotta have smooth operation.

I did find that trying to lock/unlock on the trailer could exacerbate the problem, but only occasionally. Probably because my poor centering on the trailer bunks slightly twisted the boat and frame enough to cause binding.

I do know that each time you meet resistance and force through it that plastic part gets worn down a little bit more. Talking with other Brats, it's not an unusual problem. The usual first try fix by your dealership (or you) would be to take a little Dremel tool and open up the hole in the door frame slightly. That seems to cure most of the locking issues. Anything further will likely require a new lock and/or a new approach.

Good luck.

Mine does that once in a while. What always works is to make sure you close the door firmly before you try and lock it. If it fails, then turn the key to unlock it and slam the door and retry. Sometimes applying some pressure to the door while locking seems to help. Good luck.

Allan-

Here are two threads that discuss various cabin lock problems and fixes.

Door Lock Question

Door Lock Problems

One of the fixes involves adding an extra cam lock, which would be a simple replacement (leave the present lock unlocked at all times and lock the cam lock when needed).

Note:

My older Perko lock on my '87 has lasted 20 years now, and only goes from 6 to 8 o'clock to lock, and 6 to 4 to unlock. Withdraw key at 6.
More news at 11.

Joe.........great note in your reply. I liked it.

My door lock has not been violated in 23 1/2 yrs. as it quit working then. I even lost the key.
I just use a hasp with a padlock and it works w/o fail.

Thanks everyone who responded.
It sounds like the prudent thing is to take up Sea Wolf's suggestion and just install a cam lock and leave the original lock unlocked.
