As a marine engineer I sailed the Johnstone Strait many time and I can tell you it can be a dangerous wind funnel. Tidal currents that turn and run against 15kn or more winds can be short steep and nasty in very short order. So bear this in mind - its not just the wind strength - its the apposing forces of wind against tidal currents. We have come to the aid of a 40ft fish boat overwhelm with following seas in those waters . And had our wheel house window punched out before we got up storm batons over the windows.Larry H":2i0rs82a said:unless the weather is absolutely crappy (of course it could be), you will be in the Broughtons in two days from Blaine
If the Westerly is blowing in the Johnstone Strait, that 2 days could turn into a week. In 2013 I waited 4 days for the wind to let down in the Johnny!
Best to start following the Johnstone Strait forecast a week or so prior to your trip to help with the decision to go by boat or ferry. Link to Johnston Strait weather http://weather.gc.ca/marine/forecast_e.html?mapID=03&siteID=06800

We will cover more ground up north in a shorter window by skipping the to and from. Worth it if "vacation time" is still a factor in your life.
