Broughtons

Thanks Boris, for doing the math! I knew it was cheaper but didn't want to do the calculations. Thank goodness for Engineers like you. Once you've done the trip up through the rapids and Johnstone, there's no reason to do it again.

unless the weather is absolutely crappy (of course it could be), you will be in the Broughtons in two days from Blaine

If the Westerly is blowing in the Johnstone Strait, that 2 days could turn into a week. In 2013 I waited 4 days for the wind to let down in the Johnny!

Best to start following the Johnstone Strait forecast a week or so prior to your trip to help with the decision to go by boat or ferry. Link to Johnston Strait weather http://weather.gc.ca/marine/forecast_e.html?mapID=03&siteID=06800
As a marine engineer I sailed the Johnstone Strait many time and I can tell you it can be a dangerous wind funnel. Tidal currents that turn and run against 15kn or more winds can be short steep and nasty in very short order. So bear this in mind - its not just the wind strength - its the apposing forces of wind against tidal currents. We have come to the aid of a 40ft fish boat overwhelm with following seas in those waters . And had our wheel house window punched out before we got up storm batons over the windows.

We did the trip from Port Orchard and spent over 2k in gas a few years ago in the 25 Cruiser. This summer we go up again in late August and be trailering up to Port Mcneill. We will cover more ground up north in a shorter window by skipping the to and from. Worth it if "vacation time" is still a factor in your life.

Thant's the timing and the routing I am thinking I would be interested in. Possibly adding a stop over at Port Alberni and some west side time.

hardee, if you can get over to the west side of Vancouver isle, I think its better than the Broughtons. I'm not saying not to do the Broughtons, I'm saying the 3 major inlets on the west side (Barkley Sound, Clayquot Sound and Nootka Sound,) you can have a wonderful time in ADDITION to the Broughtons. Here's how we did it in Journey On: Vancouver Isle and the Broughtons .

Boris,

Thanks you so much for that link. What a great write-up, and spectacular country. I grew up (sort of, for a while anyway) in Port Alberni, and have taken the mail boat out to Uclulet when I was little and then once since I left the island. Now it's time to take my own boat and expand the route and time.
