"Brew HO-HO" is the title of an article featured in today's Everett Herald.
This article is about locally produced seasonal ales that were brewed in Snohomish and King counties and were rated on a scale of "4 stars" (being the highest) to "2 stars".

Of the those selected in the article the "Avalanche Winter Ale" brewed by the Snoqualmie Falls Brewing Co. which is owned by the C-Dory owners of "Daydream" and "Anna Leigh" was rated as a....... :star :star :star :star :beer .

The article goes on to say..."The Snoqualmie Falls brewer bills this uniquely red ale as a heavy hitter. Still, it goes down smoothly, with a subtle high note that set it apart from many of its' peers." "Alcohol by volume: 6.8%."

Thank you Dave. I have always put the Avalanche Winter Ale as my second favorite ale. My first is Copperhead American Pale Ale. This is the beer I keep on tap at home. However when late November approaches I really look forward to the Avalanche.
In fact we are going to the brewery in two days and I will be bringing back a little to get me through the winter.

The description our website gives for the Avalanche on www.fallsbrew.com is:

Avalanche Winter Ale. Avalanche Winter Ale is a heavy hitter designed to take the chill off the stormy Northwest winter weather. We start with Two-row Pale, Munich and Aromatic malts, plus Special B for its unique color and flavor, then add distinctive Northwest hops. The result is a deep red, complex and hoppy ale.

Not being a beer drinker, I still must congratulate accomplishment and craftsmanship. (This would be a good place for :beer :beer right?) If I were, I think I would be going towards the Snoqualmie Falls Brewing Co. Anybody with good enough taste to have a C-Dory or 2 or ...... certainly must have good taste in what they do as well.

and here's a chance to ask a "hoppy" question, and be right on target. What do the hopps do for the beer? Is that where the main (or background) flavor comes from? I don't know of anything else that hopps get used for. Are there other products that compete for the crop?

Pat, David, time for a Mike Rowe Dirty Jobs show at the brewery. Let us know when it will air :wink

Dave and Pat ,Good job on the write up. Where around here (marysville ) can I get a few bottles of your beer? I dont get down to the falls much and every once in while I want a beer so it might as well be yours.
 
HAGGENS usually has our bottles. If you don't find them there, make sure you ask the dept head.

Hey how about getting that on line store part of the web site going pat. Then when you deliver beer to me in the islands you can write off all your gas.
 
Pat and David, your winter ale is some of the best stuff. I have a coworker who was taking about how great your winter ale was. I was going to do some name dropping but thought better of it.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, Harvey.

No other products compete with beer for the hop crop that I know of - maybe Budweiser makes a perfume or something?

Our beer is made from malted barley, hops, yeast and water (plus malted wheat in the case of our hefeweizen).

Color, mouthfeel (body), sweetness, and flavor come from MALTED BARLEY. The base malt is very pale and neutral in flavor. We use lots of different types of specialty malted barley, varying mainly in color and flavor, to make a wide range of beers.

HOPS add bitterness, aroma and flavor to a beverage that would otherwise be dominated by malt sweetness. They are analogous to spices in cooking.

Beer, besides being a great natural food product, is also known to have certain soporific properties - as Patty can attest when I fall asleep on the couch at 8:00 p.m.! You should consider prescribing it!

After 40 plus years, I've just learned today that it really was not the professors in my college classes that made me drowsy, it was the beer that I consumed the night before that caused me to be soporose. :roll:

Pat, Thanks, great explanation. Believe it or not I have wondered about that for a very long time. I used to have relatives in the Yakima area some of whom picked hops back in the late 50's. Strange plants those were. Not like fruits, nuts, vegies.

As to the soporific properties. There are propensities to sleep early on, that are not disputed, followed by some occasions of disrupted sleep later on. (Like having to get up off the couch, and drain the radiator on the way to bed.)

Alcohol is evidently biphasic as this article explains. However the alcohol level in beer is quite low and it is generally thought the soporific properties come from the hops (hop pillows are another competing use for hops, as I now think about it). So beer, to the extent that it disrupts sleep, is as Harvey points out more due to its effect on the bladder than the central nervous system, except for those who drink exceptionally large quantities!

Actually we are wave watchers. Many many lines of lots and lots of waves. We can tell when it is time for us to get some sleep; All those wavey lines start getting straight. :wink :star :star :moon

Sometimes we even see waves on water. (Not often enough though) :lol:

Harvey-As you know, I am one who has, in the past, gratefully taken advantage of your knowledge. I know that the excellent light therapy that you suggested is in some part responsible for my present "happy" outlook. Even though it sometimes manifest itself by silliness on my part, it certainly is a lot better that the seasonal affect disorder it has replaced. :hot

Harvey, in my line of work the wavey lines (aka Ventricular Fibrillation) tend to be the precursor to your straight line (aka Asystole) or in layman's term "flat line". :roll: .....definitely not the sleep most of us are seeking.


In light of this thread's title, when Asystole does appear on MY EKG, I do hope that I was relaxing in the cockpit of my C-Dory with my cold stiff hand wrapped around a nice cold Snoqualmie Falls Avalanche Winter Ale ........ :wink .
