BoatUS magazine (December 2016)

Once again, I am impressed with the BoatUS magazine's line-up of articles.

This month is no exception. There is something for everyone.

P26 Eye Candy for Fish tells us which colors work best at different depths (due to color loss as the lure gets deeper).

P36 Discusses the continuing Florida anchoring debate.

P40 pointers on safe, no-spill refueling.

P68 Electrical stuff - actually using multimeters and all that magical stuff that clutters-up our tool boxes.

P70 Thoughts and techniques on getting unstuck (not that a C-Brat would EVER run out of water!)

P74 Windlass maintenance

P76 Servicing a water pump....

p80 Use of "Rescue tape."

P86 preparing your boat for a storm (or winter)

P89 Anatomy of a Nor'easter (in non weather-person terms)

P90 Detectors (both vapor and water)

P93 The Fungus Among Us ... how to combat mold and mildew

Whew(!), I'm not even finished reading this edition and I'm already thinking "I may have to keep this one!"

Best,
C&M

Hi Casey,

Thanks for whetting my appetite. I won't be able to see my Boat US for a while yet. Could look on line but that would spoil it. It is one of the few magazines I get that gets read, cover to cover, each and every one.

I've been a member for 10 years now, and last mag I looked at, it appeared they were including the insurance magazine as well. I hope that continues.

Thanks again for passing that along.

Finally home. Guess what. My BoatUS magazine is not in my mail. BUT I did have an email from BoatUS. They wanted my current mailing address. Seems the post office sent my mag back because I had my mail on vacation hold. Of course, the Golf Digest magazine that comes to the previous owner of my house (that would be 10+ years ago), was saved for me even though I have spent numerous attempts to cancel that subscription, via, phone, email, mailed the cover with the label back to them notified the PO that jack ???????? does not live here any more.

Got the Boat US mag on the way back to me. If anyone wants Golf Digest, I'll bring them to Seattle or Friday Harbor.

For what it's worth, BoatUS has an app specifically for their magazines. It's called "BoatUS Mag." Open the app and you can download and read their magazines all the way back thru 2014, including the current December 2016 issue. It is great when traveling.

Rob

Thanks Rob. A good app. And I have that through BoatUS and use it on my Tablet, but I still like my paper magazine too.

Jay, I don't know if they have "TowBoatUS" up there, or the Boat US towing service, but if you have boat towing insurance with them they will pay if you have to use another company because they don't have service in your area. Might be worth a check.

Harvey,

BoatUS doesn't offer any services in Alaska including boat towing, in fact there is no boat towing service up here. When there is a distress call it's usually a good samaritan who does the towing.

Great magazine but BoatUS doesn't offer any services in Alaska, wish thay had an inexpensive subscription just for the magazine.

Probably the cheapest way to join Boat US and get the magazine is to get the West Marine Gold Advantage membership for $24 a year. This includes the Boat US membership and the magazine. There is a $10 reward, for each $250 spent. Even if you don't have a West Marine store, it might be worth while....

Jay, I renew my BoatUS membership each year at the Seattle Boat Show. That gets me a discount on my Recreational Boaters Association of Washington membership, (50% Discount if I remember right), and some free boating bag or other "trinket". The Boat US all inclusive towing for our size boats is about 150, and I think a very good investment in peace of mind. (On almost any tow, the minimum is going to be about $500, and could easily reach $2K or more depending on where, when and ....other bad things.)

I am going to ask about the Alaska coverage this time. I know there are a few BoatUS tow services up the east side of Vancouver Island, and from what I recall, they have reciprocal payment for other tow service if that is closer than a BoatUS. Guess some clarification would be in order.
