BOATER EDUCATION ??

I’ve been interested in boats since I was a kid, when I passed all kinds of boats daily on my paper route on the Edmonds waterfront. C-Dory’s remind me of a boat I fell in love with back then. I’d like to rent a C-Dory in Anacortes and get out in the San Juan’s next spring but there’s a problem. I need the necessary boater education to please Washington State and to boat safely on the Puget Sound. I live in Mount Vernon. I’d appreciate your suggestions on how to gain the boater education and do it inexpensively (gotta save to buy a C-Dory you know :) ).
 
If you can, go to a classroom course given by either the Coast Guard Auxiliary or the US Power Squadron. Besides the camaraderie, you'll have knowlegable instructors, learn a lot from the questions asked, and find out stuff about boating in your local area.
 
The Coast guard Auxiliary flotilla in Anacortes has a Boating Safety and Seamanship course starting September 21. It is held at the senior center in Anacortes and begins at 7PM. It is Much more comprehensive than the one day courses required for the Washington boater safety card. The core course (6 lessons) covers things such as boat handling, "rules of the road", aids to navigation, equipping your boat, and more. The expanded course, another six lessons at no additional charge, includes navigation, weather, line handling, radio and radar plus other stuff. David McKibben of Anna Leigh and I of C-Cakes are flotilla members and I will be teaching the radio/radar portion. PM me if you are interested and I will get you details. Or...you can just come to the senior center on the 21st a little before 7PM and sign up then.
 
Man, Barry...I'd love to take the more expanded course, and with you and Capt David teaching it'd be perfect....but Anacortes is a drive for me. :|

The one day class we tok was VERY basic and when we took it in Everett from the CG Aux there it was pretty very new, very inexperienced boat owners. (The guy in front of me was "impressed" that I knew the reg sticker when STERN-side of the reg numbers. :lol: What does that tell you? :wink:)
 
Ken, My summer employer, Anacortes Yacht Charters, has a 22 that can be chartered by the day. Not sure how much it rents for. Another thought is that you go out with someone in the area that has one as a guest. Usually all you have to do is suggest you are interested in getting out on the water on one and several C-Brats will offer to take you out. I am not available until late October, but I would be happy to take you for a spin.

David brings up an excellent idea, Just give a shout on here asking for a ride. I am part time on Camano, however my next trip up is many weeks away. I usually launch out of Camano state part, not too far from you.

The 22 cruiser at Anacortes Yacht Charters rents for 280-365 a day depending upon season, however they will check to make sure you can handle the vessel prior to renting to you, so keep that in mind.
 
Ken I live in marysville and boat all winter on and off for black mouth. I would be happy to take you out sometime for a day trip and let you run the boat. you have to do more the ride to see if you like a boat, you have to drive it. I have been running small boats all my life and can teach you the basic of handleing and docking. give me a call some time.
 
p.s. I am not offering training in lou any of the forementioned classes. You and anyone else that is going to be on the boat on a regular basic should take several classes together. not enought wives know how to run the boats they spend so much time on. Take all the classes you can, but also get some stick time in a boat with some one that knows how to handle one. On that not my docking at nanimo this summer does not count, sweat was in my eyes. :cry

I had a dog that did that age all my rare wood ect. I took her back to the animal shelter, left her overnight and the wife had a guilt trip so we picked the dog up the next day, has not eaten anything since and that was 5 years ago!
 
Just out of curiosity, Does California have a boating license requirement? I can't find one, though BoatEd is willing to issue me one for $30.

I'm guessing that if the dog "has not eaten anything since" for 5 years, then certainly he/she is no longer a problem...... :roll:

Our dog is a Bordercollie mix, she has actually turned out to be a pretty good dog, however she is still a bit wild to put on the boat. I guess she figured out who was the boss.
 
What an awesome response! Thank you all so much for sharing your ideas and insights on Boater Education. You have already jump-started my learning curve. I have perused the websites mentioned. Boy, there is a wealth of information right there. I like the idea of the classroom setting and hearing the questions of others which I haven’t yet thought about. Great idea and should be fun so I have chosen to take the Coast Guard Auxiliary class in Anacortes starting Monday. My daughter and her boy friend are interested and may join me. Especially looking forward to the classes taught by Barry and David. Thanks to Don and Brenda for the kind welcome. Special thanks to Thomas, David and Don for gracious offers to take me for a spin to acquaint me with their boats and help me gain a better understanding of handling and docking before I do a check ride by the rental company. I’m sure you each have varying perspectives to offer. I will be in touch. Getting excited already! Many Thousand Thanks to all you C-Brats, you have helped so much. Last but not least, I learned it may be cheaper and easier to own a boat than a dog. :D
