BOAT NAMES

Boats seem to get their name for different reasons. Some are obvious like being named after someone. Many names are just plain whimsical. Some boat names are not so obvious and might have a small story behind them, like EXACT LEE.
The name EXACT LEE came from the schooner EXACT, whose birthplace was a few hundred yards upstream of the homeport for EXACT LEE. The way the story is told around here, the EXACT was one of the 270 coastal sailing vessels built from 1784 to 1884 in the local shipyards. At that time centerboard schooners were preferred for trade in the shallow bay and river wharves of coastal waters. The EXACT was built in 1830 and served the eastern seaboard for twenty years until she cleared her home port of Nantucket for San Francisco in 1850, with the demand for coasters on the Pacific caused by the California gold rush. In 1851 a group of gold hunters chartered the EXACT for a voyage to British Columbia, but also on board was a landing party of some of the early settlers of what was to become Seattle.

So 157 years later, the progeny of the EXACT and the Northwest, the EXACT LEE made her way overland back to the birthplace of the EXACT. Visions of relaxation on the water and getting EXACTLY the boat I’ve always wanted came together with a nautical twist as the EXACT LEE, and she was properly christened as such.

Some similarities EXACT/EXACT LEE: 22 foot beam/22 foot length, twin mast/twin engine, and both shallow draft.

Ha! One never knows what will be dredged out of the Coinnecticut River. Congrats upon your leaving Lurkland!. I feel the same way about our CD. Its the boat I have always wanted but could not quite get, and have always compromised one thing or another. I beleive that my seemingly never ending quest for " bigger, more comfy, more versaatile, more whatever...has been satisfied for at least the next several seasons. Most importantly, The Admiral seems quite contented as well...I am happy that she talked me out of the Angler and into the Cruiser, too. I was bent on having the larger cockpit area, but she fell in love with the little galley, so, we went with the 2004 Cruiser instead of a newer Angler.... Hey, if thats the biggest issue we have had to argue over lately, well, I'd say that life is pretty good! I am still getting my mind around the fact that she is really ours. Now, if we can just settle upon a name without arguing......Well, I got to name the new dog, so, I guess its only fair that Val get to pick out an appropriate monicker. I have faith and trust in her judgement.

I wanted to name our boat, BUM SQUEAKER

You know that nervy/tense feeling when you are going at speed ? Anyway, the admiral said no. So NOMAD it is.

Martin.
