anyone have any suggestions for boat insurance? I live in Washington, but the boat will be staying in VA for the next year. I have contacted Boat US and Progressive and plan to give Geico a shout. After all, 15% is 15%. Thanks
 
mine isnt' the cheapest but is reasonable. I have Safeco and they have insured the boat, trailer, electronics and $x,xxx in personal effects for around $30/month or something like that. it might be slightly less. I know others here are paying less but I was happy because insurance values my boat much higher than the bank. I also have a high dollar of tow insurance value with that, etc etc.

I have been told that Progressive is good also, and what I saw the rate was better via progressive even.
 
Over the years, the boat insurance topic has arisen a number of times. As I recall, quite a few Washington C-Brats have Progressive. Naturally, it is wise to "shop around" as what was best last year might not be best this year.

Personally, I still have Progressive for the C-Dory and it's trailer. The 12 month premium costs $380. This includes having it insured for an "Agreed Value" of $80,000 for both Comprehensive and Collision.

Having a boater education card additionally saves a few dollars on the premium.

being legally required to have one, I hadn't even though about that. I will have to ask my ins if they figured that in.
 
We have used Progressive for a number of years. Our rates are a little higher in Florida with the Hurricanes, but we have been happy. There is both a boaters education, and multi boat discounts. There is further for trailering the boat inland during a named storm.

I use BOAT Insurance Agency (http://www.boatinsurance.net). They shop the policy to a whole bunch of underwriters for the best rate. My policy is written by ACE. Competitive rate, generous navigation limits.

Never made a claim, so I don't know how that process works...
 
It pays to shop around in purchasing boat insurance. Realize, as you look at them, they look at you.

Be aware that your driving record may be tapped; speeding, DUI, "points" etc. If found, it may be reflected in your premium or, worse case, you could be cancelled or denied.

I love progressive insurance. Recently, my boat sustained damage. Progressive was prompt, and the claims adjuster was extremely thorough. He worked with the boat repair facility to ensure that the work was done, and he followed up regularly with them and me. I could not be more happy with Progressive insurance company. Incidentally, I used to purchase my insurance through an agent. Now, I purchase my insurance directly through Progressive and realize quite a cost savings while receiving excellent customer service. There are many insurance companies that will ensure your boat, but what I think should be on everyone's mind is what happens when you make a claim. This company takes care of their customers.

You're not kidding about a few dollars. I took a 30 hr class and Progressive knocked off $7. Now I can't decide whether to buy 1.5 gallons at the fuel dock or a few stainless steel screws with the refund check :shock:

One reason I went with Progressive was that they offered an agreed value policy that was set to the marine appraiser's value at time of purchase. I didn't like the idea of an insurance co. performing a post accident appraisal and giving me half of what the boat is worth should something bad happen.
 
I use State Farm. Not sure they know which end of the boat goes frontwards but they pay. $450/yr for my 26' at $50k value.
I had my 22' crushed in a pole barn after it snowed 7' in one day and it collapsed. The cabin roof was crushed down to the top of the trunk cabin breaking all of the windows. Also the cabin got full of water ruining all of the upholstery. THey paid for all of it w/o problem. Also my 30' Holiday Rambler RV was crushed to 4' high. They paid total value for that.
