Boat Exchange?

There are organizations that put people together who wish to exchange residences for a specified period of time. It just occurred to me that this site could provide a similar service for people who wanted to have a C-Dory experience in another area. With the high cost of fuel now, this might provide a cost-effective alternative to trailering one's boat cross-country. Because we are all one big happy, extended (albeit somewhat dysfunctional  ) family that would presumably treat others' boats with more care than a rental/charter, I am throwing this idea out for discussion.

Warren,
Good idea, I exchange my home in Ketchum (Sun Valley) Idaho with people that have home in areas that I want to spend time. It has worked well. I would think insurance coverage may be an issue. It would be nice if one insurance co. could inter insure all parties involved in an exchange program.

Well, we have experience with being the recipients of the generosity of Tom and Kathy Callahan in 2005, when they heard we were coming to the Great Eastern Shore CBGT on the Chesapeake, Tom PM'd an offer we couldn't refuse - they would stay in their boat Otter for the gathering but we were welcome to use it during the following week for cruising the Chesapeake. We had a GREAT time! We would love to reciprocate, but Tom could never make the time to get out here. He hasn't posted here for a long time. We did not sweat the question of insurance for this, maybe we should have, and I would definitely be concerned if it were some kind of organized exchange program rather than just one owner giving permission to another to use his boat as an isolated event. We also have experience with others cruising Daydream - one of my friends and his friend cruised Daydream back down from Alaska after Patty and I flew home - and that did not turn out so well, there was some damage to the boat that we ended up eating...
