Anyone have any great ideas for either permanent, or portable, boarding ladder setup for a 22 cruiser w/o the swim platform. Been thinking of some permanent installation in case of man overboard while fishing. Don't really ever want to use it, but could be really important when ocean fishing. Don't really like the idea of transom mount due to the kicker and fishfinder transducer location. Any side mount ideas/photos, etc would be appreciated.

The factory sells a side mounted boarding ladder for the 22 (which is what I have). It hooks into two retaining clips that are mounted to the top of the gunnel. It folds in half and fits under the aft passenger seat. It's $260 from the factory (installed). Pictures can be found at http://www.c-dory.com/22_side_mount_bording_ladder.htm. I'm sure you could buy the same thing and install it yourself.

You can get the same ladder from West Marine for $160.00 Buy an extra set of clips and you can mount the laddar on port or startboard.
Swing down stern ladders are common on sailboats. Take a walk around the local marinas and look at them. There should be room to mount one on a C-Dory, they're no wider than the swim step but don't project far from the transom.
Getting it to self deploy can be done with a lanyard and detent pin, we had this arrangement on our San Juan 28 for years.

I know that you mentioned not having a swim step, but not sure why you are not considering one. On our 16' I had one and thought it was great! Also have a swim step on our 22' with twin engines (and with trim tabs), and it is still great! (To me the advantages of the swim step, is that if you are bow anchored out from shore with the stern to the beach, it is possible to step from shore to vessel without getting your feet wet, also handy for stepping onto to inspect your prop etc. if you strike anything while "out at sea"). (On our 16' the swim step did not interfere with either the transducer or the kicker). (Additionally, having the swim step with attached ladder eliminates the "storage concerns" of a detachable ladder, thereby leaving more space available on board for the important things in life.......ie: :beer :beer :beer LOL... :wink
