Blast from a Boat

Hi El and Bill,

Nice pictures of the 4th on Lopez.

I have never been to the San Jauns during this time of year. Have you found any of the places you wanted to go too crowded? Has there always been free mooring bouys or space at the dock or have you decided to go elswhere because of the number of boats?

We are planning on heading up thee this Sept.

Thanks,
Steve

We usually anchor out, and there has been absolutely no problem with space -- even for the fireworks at Deer Harbor or Lopez. We have only wanted to tie at docks a few times, and no problems. Not that many boats here to be a problem for us -- lots of places to explore and with our boat's ability to anchor in shallow water or come close to a beach for the dinghy ride ashore we have had no problem. Marvelous area and should be perfect for you in September if the weather holds. We have had lots of sunshine and now have another week of good weather promised by NOAA.

Thank you for sharing.

Do you ever find boats with a standard 3' or greater draft assuming that
just because you are there, they can also run into the same area?

Yep, sure have. One time a rather large sailboat came into the head of the cove (where we had anchored in 8 feet of water at high tide -- low was going to be down 6 feet) and they anchored! We had to dinghy over to them and almost argue with them that they might have to leave a little early, since they had a 6 foot draft. When they got the drift, so to speak (we think they felt we wanted seclusion at our anchorage and wanted to get rid of them), they were very appreciative of our suggestion -- especially since they only moved into water 12 feet deep and the next morning we had to pull them off the mud since they were just touching and couldn't move. Ah --- yes --- the "tides of life, unerring and deep" (sometimes)
