Bilge pump running offshore

My bilge pump was running every 20 mins ish on my third run out. We had wind that pushed us sideways to the swell (moored up) and we were rocking alot. Could not see any place water was coming in but didn't look super hard. Should have checked the live well. Pump was out so we were dumping fresh water in every so often often to keep the bait fresh. Water was splashing into the open well in front of the engines but couldn't see how in could get into the cockpit area...

Any ideas?

If your pump has an electronic fluid level sensor this will happen.
I changed mine to the old internal float s/w & had no more problems. This assumes it wasn't pumping water out each time? :mrgreen:
 
Wind and/or waves from the beam can/will splash into the cockpit. If your bilge pump is on an auto setting, (and I think it should be when you are running in those conditions) it will run off and on as you go. I cross the Strait of Juan de Fuca, (North coast of Washington State regularly) and the pump is always on auto for those crossings -- Just one less thing to worry or wonder about. With the boat up and running on plane, you may not see enough water to make it run but it can be there, behind the tanks and under the splashwell.
