big lings

Should be the same w/ halibut. The bigguns are the reproducing females.
In BC they just instituted a rule that requires release of any hali over 126cm (49.6") or a little under 60lbs. Unfortunately:
1) the reason for this was to reduce the catch to keep the recreational guys under a quota determined by total weight and not conservation and
2) the commercial guys are not similarly restricted and can keep any size.

Regardless, it's a good idea to let the big breeding females go and almost all hali over 60 lbs are female.

roger, its more complicated then that. If you have two fish in possession one has to be under 83cm. so if you fish Canada for two days and come back with two fish, which is allowed, one can be 126cm and the other can only be 83 cm. and there is a yearly limit of ??10 I think, have to re check that. Did you see the new map of all the rock fish closures areas that do not allow ANY fishing??

Tom - yes - I realized the one under 83cm thing. Also the annual limit is now 6.

its getting hard to figure out all the rules for the different areas on both sides of the border. The new maps of all the rock fish areas area crazy. You have to have that map on you if you are going to fish in Canada. Its not just that you can not fish for rock fish in these areas you can't fish at all in these areas.

just zoom in and out on this map. red areas are no shell fish except crab and shrimp. green is no fishing because of rock fish.

bottom of this page is the list of RCA's ( rockfish conservation areas) you can just follow those links back to the map.

Well, I would be happy if WDFW would give a number of fish per year...pick a number, say 12, and let us fish April through October to get those 12 fish. This stupidity of Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays in May is idiotic.

Peter asked me to go fishing on sunday for lings. We took his boat out of twin bridges dry storage at around 9am.
We stopped at a few stops on the way out to catch sole with out any luck. We decided to not chance getting skunked and head straight to my spot again. With in 20 mins we had a bucket of bait. Sole are a lot of fun to catch.

We started to fish the hump at jones and I nailed a keeper right off the bat. Peter got two sub-legals that were both just a inch short. The current started to rip and we started to loss rigs and get hooked up to much so we left and head to a new spot that I wanted to try that had less current at that time of day. First pass I nailed a really nice fish that would have been just at the top of legal or over sized. A not to be named net man caused a in water release at the boat side.

Total for the day was five fish to the boat and a great day on the water. It was really flat and warm most of the day with very few other boats out. Loved it. need to get one more day out there. Who wants to take me fishing next? I proved rods and rigs you provide the boat.

You're definitely living up to the only C-Brat rule Tom, "just be nice". Too nice! I totally blew that net job, my bad. No excuses, I guess I was expecting the fish to swim into the net like salmon do. When it didn't, I knocked it off with the net. Too bad too because that was one beautiful (if you can call a ling beautiful) big. In fact we were wondering if it might be oversize, it was that big linger. Well not as big as the ling you caught on the first page but pretty big. Sorry buddy.

An extra bonus was catching those fun little sanddabs. They were a kick to catch. I was definitely better catching those feisty little critters than I was catching those big ol' lings. Oh well, we'll get um next time. I know how and where now.

Once again, thanks Tom for showing me another fishery. He also was the guy who first showed me how to downrig for salmon. You da man!

Here's a pic of Tom's ling, the one I DIDN'T knock off the hook. :D

Not as big as the monster on the first page but good eating. Made great fish and chips last night.
