best motor for C-16?

Newly registered here, and looking to buy a C-16 cruiser. Recently looked at a boat with a Mere 50, and thought it looked kinda massive. Going online, I found that it weighs 360 lbs, where a Honda 50 is only 215 lbs. So nearly a quarter of your 4 person load limit is going to a heavy motor with the Merc. It also looks to me like the boat does not have a massive hull area to carry a motor, perhaps why so many use trim tabs...

I'm not trying to make enemies here(!) but I would really like some opinions on the importance of motor weight. Thanks in advance for taking the trouble to reply!

Good research. Sounds like 145# for dead weight (maybe increased reliability but I doubt that considering how reliable the Hondas are) in the stern of a stern heavy boat. Look for a CD16 with a Honda.

Dave,
Welcome aboard--and don't worry about offending anyone--there are always "disagreements" which are friendly about size of motors, two vs one etc...

I wonder where you found the Mercury 4 stroke outboard with a weight of 360#. I ran the weights for 5 year periods and almost all were in the 250# +/-.

Perhaps there was a typo in the place you found that weight. The current 90 hp is 360#. I would not consider a 90 on the 16 C Dory !!
