Bear won Fisherman zero

smart move by the fisherman. remove the threat by removing the food. Bad thing is that the bear will look for more of those nice men with the free fish

Yes, Tom, a good move by the fisherman. I was laughing on the video due to believing him in no more than imaginary danger from the bear. It was well fed and dead fish were up and down the beach. Had no reason to do him injury and acted quick to run from any aggression toward it either in voice or movement. In his defense if I turned around and a bear was checking me and the fish out that close would have got my heart going too. That evening He came back with a bow with voiced intent of bagging the bear. I filmed the feeble attempt with more laughter. It was obvious to me He really didn't want to get close enough again to the bear to hit it with an arrow. Going through the alders on the west side of the road it made them move like a mouse going through grass.

This happened 10 years ago and I looked that spot up on Google Maps free download and there is now a camera view from exactly where I was standing showing a parking lot where the bear was going in and out of the bushes. Also the fish hatchery ladder was closed off. When we were there I walked up the top edge of the ladder looking at the fish. Also sea otters around. Whole area was a neat experience with Google Map not showing any improvement to me.

Sometimes you just gotto pay the "tax".

No I don't think it was a good move....if you look at the video you will see the bear only shows interest.....but is running away when the guy throws the fish...... better thing is to drop the fish in the water...and walk away...away from the bear and the fish.... but all this guy was doing is making the bear think all fishermen have fish.....not kool

I had a Kodiak bear come down where I was fishing....I just walked away and the bear thankfully allowed me....(I didn't have any fish to throw)

Good observation to a point, but for a black bear it had less fear of people then most I've encountered and either throwing it at the bear or down on the ground, I believe it already associated people with fish and recognized the source of that fish either thrown at it or to the side was the person. It was coming up to the fisherman with the fisherman's fish in mind for itself. When the fisherman went out into deeper water and further down the shore the bear came back and got the fish. Our yelling only hurried it on its way after it got what it wanted. Even though it was less leary of people then most it was in good condition with plentiful other food, so if I had been in the fisherman's shoes I would have kept the fish and moved aggressively toward the bear only throwing the fish to the side if my aggression didn't work. But that's easy to say now. Though for sure not a college certified bear expert, I've observed and been around many more bears then most people and yet to turn around not thinking a bear anywhere about and have a bear within a couple of feet wanting what I had in my hands, so until that happens can only say for sure what "I think I should do in such a case".
