Battery storage compartment leaks on new boat?

Hi,

New C-Dory owner (22 Cruiser). Have been breaking in the motors on the water and otherwise tinkering on land. Everything seems OK except that I notice that the battery storage compartments on both sides leak when it rains. Is this normal? And what can I do to eliminate/reduce it? Does the water that leaks in work its way down into the bilge and out the drain?

Thanks, Tom

Tom,

The battery compartments (lazarets), have had some variation in how the work. The covers on the older ones, were not spec'd to be applied in a horizontal application. If there was water on the cover, when it was opened, it ran down into the compartment. One of the guys found a cover that worked, (where the cover actually covered the opening and when opened the water went down over the side and not into the compartment. Joel sold about 50 or 70 sets of the proper covers and many of us replaced the existing covers. We tried to get the factory to change to the proper covers, and were told they did, but ....... maybe that is what you have.

Can you tell if the water is coming from under the seal, or is it just running in from the cover at it is opened? The change is pretty easy to do, and worth the time and cost. If your water is coming from under the seal, then it is a remove and reattach with good adhesive, (Not silicone sealer). If you have to remove it anyway, ONLY put on the proper cover.

Search lazarette covers, (in the search box top of the page) or hatch covers and you will find several threads addressing the change.

I gave all the part numbers to Scott when my 2011 was being built as I wanted the better covers that are designed for horizontal surfaces. I had changed my covers on the 19 with the ones Joel sold. I was assured my new 22 would have these new covers. Nope. Delivered with old style leaky Bomars. I changed them on the new boat. Get a hold of Scott or Jeff they really should swap those out it is a really well known issue. I have had my boat some time now and that is the only thing I was unhappy about. Great build otherwise. If the cover does not extend to the outside edge of the flange there is no way to keep a hatch from leaking. Period. George :D

Imtra 40154 dream white by So PAC. Fisheries Supply should have these or can be ordered online various suppliers. Hunter sailboats and many production boats use these. Get a pair even if you have to get them yourself. Big improvement my stuff stays dry now. George

I have the same problem on my 2012 22. The water runs in when the cover is closed, it is not from opening the cover. I dried the cover after a rain before opening and there is water in the battery boxes. Good to know there is a fix, I will call Triton about it.

Years ago I had the same problem on a Seaswirl boat, using a vertical hatch cover on a horizontal hatch. The factory actually did a recall and fixed the problem on all affected boats.

Did those fit the existing openings and hole patterns or did you have to adjust the cutout?

Mine were a drop in replacement. The hatch has slightly smaller cut out dimensions but was close that there was lots of meat for the flange to sit on and new screws to grab. I took the time to epoxy seal the cutout and old holes. The cutout had some gel coat on it and I added epoxy over. It is a really easy swap out as there is no standing on your head or reaching in past where you can reach or anything! George

Thanks for the info George. If you have a minute or two, any chance of a few close-up pics from different angles. I really am a dunce at these things and a picture is worth a 1000 words etc. Cheers.

Martin.

Hi,
i have a pair of brand new lazarette covers that I purchased to put on my '22 C-Dory but never managed to do so.

I will be happy to sell them to anyone for $62.00 including postage. or $50.00 locally.

Hi Martin there is A photo of the hatch in my album Kerri On layout. Along with the splash well table. The hatch is in closed position. I will see if I can get a couple more shots. Although not sure if it will show much. Hatch open....hatch closed. Grab those hatches from Anne! George

George,

Thanks for putting the part numbers out there. Besides Anne's there may be a few of those floating around unmounted yet, but they are pretty rare.

Hi Harvey. I was leaning on Scott at Triton pretty heavily to put these in new boats. They are the only thing that leaked on my boat. The rest of the boat is totally tight. Fortunately they are easy to get online or in stores. There may be some un-installed ones about. I actually found my notes on this part in my stuff. Not too bad. George :smiled
