Hi kids. I recently had my dedicated crab puller battery go belly up. It was a maint. free deep cycle gelled electroyte type that weighed about 85 lbs. The wild nordic stallion is an electrical idiot and is deathly afraid of an electrical catastrophy on the ocean and want a battery to use primarily as a dedicated pot puller battery that I could use as a backup to start the motor in an emergency useing jumper cables. suggestions appreciated. I really like my Deka Sea-mate AGM batteries and would rely on them for any power needs. I found them locally to me at a good sporting goods/marine store and they were priced competitively. I thinkthey may just call them "AGM series" instead of Sea-mate now.
 
Does puller manual state the preferred battery type, amp capacity or other specs?

I would buy a wet cell deep cycle battery from Walmart, a battery case and a smart type battery charger from the vendor of your choice. After each trip, I would the check the battery voltage after it is disconnected from the puller and check the voltage and record it in a log book. You want to avoid running down battery or completety discharging it b/c it will shorten its life span. Before charging, check each cell and add deionized water if needed.

I thought it was a toy the first time I used it b/c it did not jump start the Suburban but read the manual! You connect it to the dead battery and "wait" five minutes then start the engine. It works fine now and Homer Simpson would be proud
 
The puller is an endurance marine puller. No manual.I think these pullers were originally designed as an anchor windlass and adapted to pot pullers. Ill check out Wallyworld today.Thanks 4 reply. Vern/C-Dog

If one battery does not work or the puller constantly drains it too low, buy 2 batteries!
 
There are a few reasons to buy an AGM battery: The battery will be in the cabin, and you don't want the gas formation when charging. The battery is not easily reached to check the electrolyte level. The battery needs to be placed on its side or end. Otherwise, the flooded electrolyte battery is cheaper and should be just as reliable.
 
The first and third pic look like my puller. I think my battery died of old age and probably some neglect. I used to use it for my trolling motor on my flyfishing pram in lake berryessa, im surprised it lasted as long as it did.I think ive had it 10 to 12 years,maybe more. Wallyworld didnt have a deep cycle batt so im looking at cabelas agm. Vern/c-dog
