Here is a plan B if Bahamas don't work out . Come on down to Florida and do the 600mile cruise through Lake O down to miami down to the keys then up the other side to Ft myers -. There are pleny of small Islands you might even think your in the Bahamas just bring some Rum and Reggae. Or go out to Ft. Jefferson 70 miles past Key West theres lots to do Local currency no fees no Rude Customs to deal with .Just a thought early May would be perfect .

Also if Plan A works (Bahamas) I would think once you get there you would want to stay for at least a few weeks and explore some of the southern Islands maybe even down to the Turks and Caico's .

Could we just charter a boat for about $10,000 a couple for a month?

Its going to cost you far more than $10,000 for two months. We were talking with an owner who has a 48 footer about chartering the boat next summer for six weeks. He could let us have it for about $4,000 a week (out of charter company, in charter company, it would have been $6,500 a week!.

I was proposing $10,000 for a couple (two persons) for "a month" , not two months, but perhaps much of your same answer applies. Have to consider a lot of other expenses besides the charter fee, including fuel, food, beverages, crew, port fees, some moorage, and a host of others.

Probably cheaper to fly in directly from the west coast and join in a commercial charter tour (?)

Or simply go to Florida and do the cruise of the type JennyKatz suggests.

People do it in 13 foot Whalers, 18 foot Center Consoles, Pangas etc. But it can be rough....

.... Incidently, we would be much more in favor of further out Islands. The big deal is crossing the Gulf Stream--in my opinion, the further "out"--the better....

LOL! I always wanted to cross on a calm summer morning in my 11' Boston Whaler, just to see the looks on the Bahamians' faces when I went in under quarantine flag to clear. "Yes, I'm the master of this vessel! No, we have not had any rats or other vermin aboard!" (I planned to make sure friends in larger boats were not far behind.)

I agree on further out. The Abacos are fantastic, though a bit touristy, and the fishing in and around the Berry Islands can't be beat. I like Bimini, but view it as a stop on the way to the Bahamas.
