August 2 to 8 - 14th Annual Catalina Off-Shore Adventure

Dear All Channel Island Enthusiasts:

Due to continuing and overwhelming demand for this event, and the irresistible draw of Two Harbors, we hereby schedule the 14th Annual Catalina Off-Shore Adventure for Sunday, August 2, 2015 to Saturday, August 8, 2015. Please mark your calendars to reserve these dates. These dates are essentially the same as last year.

Unlike the Delta and Bay Extravaganza, there are no boat number limits for this event. Also, unlike our other event, for this outing you can drop in, and out, at any time you want. The Extravaganza is a "disciplined forced march", whereas the Off-Shore Adventure is a "laid back Jimmy Buffett party".

Come one, and come all, but please sign up on this thread that you will be showing up. More information will be forthcoming.

As of now we have the following three vessel attendees:

1. M/V Pounder, C-Dory (Jim & Kath)
2. M/V Islander, Duffy (Ron & Nat)
3. M/V Dinner Belle II, C-Dory (John & Robbin)

More on this "party" later.

Sincerely,
Jim and Kath

Another great cruise! There is a chance we will make it this year, if the boss says we can bring the C Dory back out when we come during the summer. (It means we have to drive two vehicles--most likely). But you have got me thinking--I had lunch with Boris and Judy (Journey On) today--and Catalina sure looked good across the water!

Yes, Yes, Yes! The MARCIA JANE will not miss this cruise! We're looking forward to it. Thanks Jim!!!

Kent and Marcia
MARCIA JANE

Bringing this back to the top of the list.
Don't know that we can make it---- but if my schedule permits we'll be there.

We will be heading West this next week, and the C Dory will be part of the caravan. My daughter and her family are moving to London for 2 years some time in mid August--and so we may not be at the gathering for the entire week, but we will try and make it for at least a few days….as well as some other trips over to the Island! Probably be there for the "dinner" .

Below is our expected attendance as of now for the upcoming Catalina Off-shore Adventure:

1. Jim & Kath - Pounder
2. John & Robbin - Dinner Belle II
3. Steve & Carmen - Dora-Jean
4. Kent & Marcia - Marcia Jane
5. Floyd & Eiko - FarC'r
6. Heinz & Diane - Lighthouse Express.

Please let us know if any of the above boats cannot attend.

Also have any of the following maybe's decided to attend?

1. Dr. Bob - Thataway
2. Roger - C-Hawk
3. Conrad - Kanalua.

Finally, do any other veterans of this event want to attend? Also, any newbies are always welcome.

This is a great event and there are no number restrictions. If you have not been before consider attending. If you have attended before try to remember what a great venue it is.

More Later,
Jim & Kath on M/V Pounder

Jim,
We cannot say 100% we will attend, since my daughter and her family leave for 2 years living in England about the 10th of August, and there may be some sort of "going away" party about this time. However, we plan to have the boat in Huntington Beach / Seal Beach, CA this summer, and will at least scoot over to Catalina a few days--if not the full week during the C Brat gathering.

Jim, you can add my brother-in-law Bernie to the list. He will be coming for a few days on his Baba 30 named Altair, however the seed I planted in his ear about C-Dories have finally paid off he has bought a C-Dory 25 (named Vega) which he plans to keep in Anacortes Wa. So he will finally be a real C-Brat.

Eiko and I of course look forward to seeing you, Kathy and all the other friends we have made on this adventure!

Journey On just got back from a week at the Isthmus string line. A great trip. We plan to be getting a new eye when you're at Catalina.

Just so there's no sticker shock, I thought we'd mention a few things. First gasoline at the Isthmus is $7.07/gal (last week,) so bring your own. The string line ran about $30/day for Journey On. We launched at Huntington Harbour since we came from San Diego. The bridge is fixed and it costs $12/day to leave the truck and trailer. I believe that's the cheapest launch ramp. So, figure it's $42-50/day. The Isthmus isn't crowded, string line had plenty of room even over the weekend.

Launch ramps are:
Cabrillo Beach, closest, most expensive, busy.
Long Beach next to Queen Mary, nice, quiet when we were there.
Long Beach 2nd street, full on week ends, sandy ramp.
Huntington Harbor, longest, 28 nmi, farthest from north arrival plenty of room.

Boris

Boris,
Thanks for the updated information--sort of the price of doing business! Inflation definitely. I recollect that several years ago the string tie was $14 a night--but there may have been some week long break in the price.

Good to hear the bridge is fixed!

As for the second street ramp--Called the Davies or 2nd street, it is concrete ramp. I have used it hundreds of times. There are several other sand ramps, which are for beach cat type of boats only--basically hand powered dollies or trailers.

I typically launch from the Cabrillo Beach ramp (San Pedro) when going to either the Isthmus or Avalon, about 20nm to either. Sometimes, I'll launch from Marina Del Rey because it is a better angle to the prevailing wind/waves or I'm with "the group", but it is a 30nm trip on the water then.

Cabrillo charges $12/day and has plenty of parking places for both tow vehicle and trailer. They don't allow overnight sleeping in your boat, most marinas don't, but if you call ahead to the Harbor Dept, there is a free anchorage area a few hundred yards from where you launch. If you don't call ahead or forget, you might be awakened at 2-3am AND receive a complementary boat inspection(!)--don't ask how I know... I've never had a security problem there, but I've heard of others having it on this forum, lucky I guess. They've also beefed up their patrols and gate entrances substantially in the last 5 years or so.

Oh, and they shut off their fresh water washdown spigots several years ago (or they broke and didn't fix them), drought has now dictated much of this now. They only have a single dock (it's long though), but many boaters launch to the side to allow 2-3 to launch/retrieve at the same time.

Bob, my description was screwed up. I've used that ramp for a long time, since it was an easy drive down from Pasadena and I do know it's concrete. However the last time we launched there, 2 years ago, there was sand covering the ramp. Sort of like having ball bearings under your tires.

Obviously we got out, but there are easier ramps to use. And they may have cleaned it, but not the last time we looked.

Steve, we've used Cabrillo to launch since we belong to CBYC. Glad to see they reduced the price since we paid $15/day, with an extra day thrown in by the computer. No arguing if we wanted to get out. It's certainly the closest to the Isthmus, 22 nmi from the ramp to the string line. Sorry we'll miss you.

Boris

Boris, thanks, but I didn't sleep well last night. Rechecked my receipt from 4th July w/e (actually 5th, 6th, 7th) and it was $15/day -- my brain must have still been in 2014...not unusual :-).

In addition, the parking booth personnel seem to be very diligent and honest, they take a fair amount of time calculating (by hand) if a partial day can be taken rather than a full day, mine was $40 total for 3 days (arrived 10am Sunday, left 5pm Tuesday). Not sure how they arrived at that, but this is typical.

Hello Kath, Jim, et-al:
Please include C-Casa in your list. Eileen will be with me for 2 days, but she needs to return home to host out of town visitors, I plan to stay the week.
The "Port of Departure" will be dictated by the weather forecast. We'll sail from Channel Islands Harbor or Marina del Rey. More on this later.
Floyd, please make sure Bernie loads up with enough wine and Tequila to keep us in good spirits.
Looking forward to visiting with everyone.
Pedro
