Are you hunkering down?

Tosca, my ancestors were nordic raiders and I'm afraid they were as bad as the plague for the rest of Europe.....

We made our last days drive and we are now back in our Monterey slip, glad to be back in one piece, the narrow Mexican roads are not for the faint of heart, back up to our ridge top tomorrow!

If anyone wants one I have some 30 round mags that I never used or needed, and I'm sure never will!

I hope you all continue to be well.

We are only panicking because politicians are using an otherwise non event to scare people and put undue pressure on others for their own ends. only 40 deaths in washington state, 30 from one building of old sick people. out of population of 7.53 million in the state???? wtf chuck???

This whole thing is just ridiculous. Yes it sucks if it you. but if you have take precautions because of your health please do so. But to close schools just so all the kids can go into day care or makeshift day care is a joke. All my friends teens are having sleep over and parties so parents can cover for one another. So what good id that do? My 30 year old son going thru chemo with two kids in the house is at risk so he kept his kids home, what that has to do with the rest of the school population is beyond me. Now we are closing restaurants and other businesses leading to short term unemployment for millions because 40 very sick people in one building got even sicker and died even earlier?? Have we lost our minds?

If you are at risk , old, sick, compromised immunity?? then stay home. The rest is just a power play and a way to get federal funds for everything under the sun. Its national stick out your hand day for government.

See you all at friday harbor

Well - we're up to 110 deaths as of today in WA state and 2221 confirmed cases. The growth rate of cases in King county is faster that what was observed in Italy and we can expect the number of cases to continue to rise exponentially for at least the next several weeks. So this is NOT just a joke or an over reaction on the part of government but rather is government doing less than what the experts would suggest. Buckle up folks, many more deaths are coming.

The message from the Canadian Prime Minister or the BC Ministry was to the point.

"Listening is your duty, Obeying (staying home) is your service."

This was after he saw the pix of the spring people enjoying the beach, and community gatherings.

Agreed Rogerbum.

Another point needs to be made. If the medical system is tied up with the Coronavirus, and it is and will be for the unknown future, there will be reduced or no medical services available for other illnesses and medical problems.

If you won't follow the advise of the scientific community for the welfare of others, follow their advise for purely selfish reasons.

for your reading enjoyment while you sit in your bunkers holding your tp.

"Levitt told the China Daily News that the virus' rate of growth had peaked. He predicted that the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in China would end up around 80,000, with about 3,250 deaths.

This forecast turned out to be remarkably accurate: As of March 16, China had counted a total of 80,298 cases and 3,245 deaths — in a nation of nearly 1.4 billion people where roughly 10 million die every year. The number of newly diagnosed patients has dropped to around 25 a day, with no cases of community spread reported since Wednesday."

" Most people have an extremely low risk of death in a two-month period, so that risk remains extremely low even when doubled."

"But he also blames the media for causing unnecessary panic by focusing on the relentless increase in the cumulative number of cases and spotlighting celebrities who contract the virus. By contrast, the flu has sickened 36 million Americans since September and killed an estimated 22,000, according to the CDC, but those deaths are largely unreported."

but read the whole thing for your self. mean while I am going to red the every increasing long list of pork that nitwit nancy is trying to but in the relief package as she uses this on going self made emergency to push forward her far left wing socialist agenda while holding up the relief. Or I can go back and read how I am miss quoted to make red herring arguments... decision decision

but do remember that if you are at risk stay home, just like with the flu, if you are not go about your day and work, just like with the flu that kills far more people.

Many of us are concerned about restaurant workers, hotel staff, grocery workers, and other low paid people, the children and how they will survive the recession and dangers they are experiencing. And we all need to be concerned for lower middle class people who have been laid off.

Foreign cruise ship, and big business are large enough to look after themselves. I don't have much sympathy for a 0.5 trillion dollar bailout for dividends and stockholders. And yes, I am also one of the later. I see nothing wrong is big business gets their bailout by exchanging that for equity. That is how the auto industry was bailed out, the taxpayers made a little profit which is the way it should be.

China enforced the shut down. The police enforced it strictly. That's what shortened their exposure period. No one, no one, "at risk" or not, was allowed to go about their daily business. Jeez.

There is good podcast on Hidden Brain called An Unfinished Lesson dated 3/23/20. Its about the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic. Worth listening to for historical reference and potential lessons.

Yep, in a communist or other extreme dictatorship you can do that pretty easy, but they also first let it spread throughout the world for weeks by arresting the Dr’s who recognized the danger & were trying to warn of it, then they denied it existed until they could no longer cover it up. Followed by as you say, clamping down like only they & a very few other countries can, to stop it in their own country, while it wreaks havoc here & the rest of the world.

Like Dot and Marty, we take this very seriously here. We have a 54 year old friend in western Washington that is finally recovering from this virus. He has been in quarantine for over 16 days. He was gracious enough to share with his friends every day about how he felt and what care he received. He was a lucky one, able to stay home but was very seriously ill. He was an extremely active and healthy person and does not know where he got it. He is very weak and exhausted but grateful to be fever free for three days now.

We both have mothers in their 90's in care facilities that are on lockdown. Very hard not to worry about them but also very good to know that they are safe and being well cared for.

Stay home and be safe - you might save another persons life if you don't care about your own!

Paul and Vicky

Marty makes the very good point that the Chinese ultimately contained the virus through measures far more extreme than orders we are under.

I find it very strange that some on this site will seek expert opinion for repairing a cored fiberglass but are their own Google experts when it comes to infectious disease. To carry the analogy further, I can find all kinds of recommendations on the internet that say it's OK to drill holes into the cored areas of my boat and seal it up with 4200. Dr. John here would tell me that's the wrong thing to do except perhaps for a temporary repair. Who do I pay attention to - the dozens of posts I can find that say 4200 is OK or Dr. John's advice? Personally, I pay attention to Dr. John because he's an expert with a great deal of experience. Even if the president told me that he thought 4200 was OK, I'd ignore his advice because I know Dr. John knows better than me and the president.

Now when it comes to infectious disease and controlling it's spread to reduce deaths - who do I pay attention to? I pay attention to the experts in public health - virologists like Dr. Fauci, epidemiologists at the CDC and those advising local government. As my "day job" is faculty member in one of the best microbiology departments in the world, I'm able to accurately determine who are the experts and I'm able to understand the relevant data. I do microbiology research and teach it on a regular basis. Hundreds of current and future nurses have learned their microbiology from me. I really don't give a crap about random links to stuff on the net unless it's from the World Health Organization, the CDC or some other recognized expert source of health information. This is no different than how I deal with my boat, I listen to the actual, expert advice.

rogerbum,

Well said......and provocative to those who are more interested in thinking than in being right.

So far, it's seems the best, most knowledgeable, honest, well-known, most heard medical "expert" the nation has during this crisis is Dr. Tony Fauci; but I fear we are going to lose his voice quite soon. It seems that loyalty to the dear leader is the most important criteria to have influence in today's political climate (as has been shown time and time again in the last few years).

This forecast turned out to be remarkably accurate:

but read the whole thing for your self.

A good read. Especially this part: "Levitt said he's in sync with those calling for strong measures to fight the outbreak. The social-distancing mandates are critical — particularly the ban on large gatherings — because the virus is so new that the population has no immunity to it, and a vaccine is still many months away. "This is not the time to go out drinking with your buddies," he said."

So Levitt's entire prediction is based everybody hunkering down. That's pretty obvious to most readers. I didn't read anything about hunkering down holding tp. But if that is also necessary to meet Levitt's trajectory, I'm not going to ridicule it, just wonder a little about why toilet paper. I sure hope the federal administration isn't in charge of that.

I suggest rereading the Levitt article first.

Then look at the long list of corporate pork Touche Turtle wants to put in the relief package to support the fascist wing of his party instead of addressing the Trump-Virus emergency. Statements like that are just too easy. I should have my own radio show.

Stay safe. Sorry I won't see you in Friday Harbor.
