Anybody Have an Espar Airtronic D2 Diesel Heater?

At $1,195 for the Espar Airtronic D2 with wiring harness, hardware and thermostat, this looks like the cat's meow...anybody have one of these or investigated it? I imagine it is quite a bit more expensive if you buy it from the local marine dealer, Boat Electric - this site supplies the trucking industry, but it is the same unit, you could use it on a boat or in the sleeper of your 18 wheeler...
 
I recall Dave in Texas installed this heater. Search the archives on airtronic. He purchased it for a lot less from a Kansas firm the best that I recall

I have sold 4 pallets worth of my kits, alot going to boat owners like yourself in the WA area. they are complete kits for on- road use. But many have adapted with no issues for marine and come back for more. if you call my work and get another parts guy and you say it for marine, they will tell you no and not sell you one. I dont see a big difference between the 2. I just say Interstate will not be liable for custom applications. So if you have any questions or wanting to know about my products, id love to help you out.

I will tell you this. if you go to a marine dealer. you have to piece together a kit. They will run you upwards of 2k.

I have a few D2 kits in stock for $875 which are 7500 BTU or i have one 14,000 BTU kit for $1900 complete. We also sell the engine water heaters that are 14,000 BTU for $1175 with a fully programable timer. which taps into the coolant lines and keeps the engine nice and tosty.

Pat, I saw one in a picture under a sink/galley recently, trying to remember which boat, maybe it was C-Daisy. Do you have an 18 wheeler too? In addition to the C-Dorys? That sucker would pull both boat trailers and your camper trailer! :roll: :thup

pat , that is the heater I just installed in the new 27. We love it. it works great and comes on quickly. heats the whole cabin and the v-berth. When you get one you will need a few things that are not in the kits. give me a call about it. I will say that is was at the edge of my comfort level for a install but i got it done and learned a lot in the process. You should come by and take a look at mine before putting one in your self. My biggest hurtle was the mounting bracket that I had to drill. Your install will be different.

Yes, it is C-Daisy...Amy and Karl. I'm looking forward to a look-see at the Sequim CBGT next month. We have a Mr Heater propane job and it works, but it isn't dry. I'm thinking this is our solution. A lot cheaper than the Wallas. Tom, good to hear some feedback. How about some pics and install tips?

Karl and Amy (c-daisy) have had the airtronic d2 for about a year now. I helped him install it out of his frustration with wallas. They have used it alot and had no trouble. C-Daisy and crew are currently north of Vancouver Island on their summer trip. They will be back on the 17th and I am sure Karl would give you any install advise you need.
 
Pat, I installed a 3500 watt Webasto in Shearwater and looked very long and hard at the D2's. I was afraid that the D2 at 2K watts might not be enough heat on cold days so went with the bigger system. Might be somewhat overkill but so far have not seen any problems with short cycling the few times I have spent the night on the boat this year. Great addition to the boat any way you go. I will documenting the install in the near future but it was not that easy or painless.

Anyone consider mounting the unit under the gunnel at the back of the cockpit. Seems like that would simplify it, if you could make it weatherproof.
 
The systems are really made to mount in a stern location with all of the ducting running forward so I looked at a the back deck mounting option. Mounting outside the cabin would require a very good watertight enclosure, then you still need to deal with heated air intake duct, heated air output duct. plus exhaust outlet and burner intake, plus thermostat wiring plus fuel lines. The units also require metric high heat ducting (60mm for the D2) that does not look to be very outdoor tolerant so I bagged this an an option.

The Wabasto is slightly larger than the D2 and uses 80mm duct as opposed to 60mm. I ended up installing under the aft table seat. The original "Cruiseship" 25's have different/larger seats and table so this mounting spot may not work on the newer 25's.

I also mounted mine under the rear seat of the table. that is where my holding tanks is and the room was not being used. On a 22 I would go with mounting under the cook top. Lots of room under there if you put it all the way against the hull wall.
 
On the current CD25s, the hot water heater usually occupies the area under the aft dinette seat, but since I removed the hot water heater, that area would be available.
