I'm considering getting a crab davit for my C-dory and looking for suggestions and pics from others that have had this done. Any info is welcome.

Thanks,

Kevin

I saw one on one of the hunkey dory 22 model boats. It was made of 2 inch aluminum tubing and passed through a hole in the top of the gunwale then into a tubular bracket bolted into the side of the cockpit. It had a nice curve bend in the tubing for the L shape and had an eye bolt on the end I believe with a pulley hanging from it. I was quickly removable.

this is a pic of Sensei beached on a sand bar while digging some large horse clams. the davit has a 3 hp Honda motor with gear reduction

If you are going to be crabbing on your fishing trips I would suggest getting a ace line hauler electric. If you are using scotty down rigger they will attach in the same mount as the downrigger. less holes and easy to remove and store. love mine but now have to figure out how to attach it to the cannon mounts.

I will normally be dropping pots while I'm out fishing it does sound like an ace line hauler electric would be the way to go. I have a Cannon Electric Downrigger on order but only one, do you know if it would mount in the same mount? If not, do you think I could get away with a manual scotty downrigger or would it need to be electric?

Thanks for the info,

The great thing with the Ace pot puller is you can dock it just about anywhere: this picture shows my ace docking station next to the starboard laz. They only weigh a few pounds and don’t take up much room. I pull three weighted shrimp pots together on a line from depths down to 800 feet, so it will get the job done. On sale you can usally pick them up for around $500 and change.

if you dont have a scotty down rigger, like me, you can just mount a scooty mount some there else and just run the power to where ever you need it. I plan on making my own slide on mount to fit the cannon bracket.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. I located an Electric Ace Line Hauler on the internet for roughly 650.00 Does that sound like a reasonable price for one of these?

Thanks again,

Kevin

I'll chime in here. The Ace Line Hauler is pretty cool. We bought one at the Seattle Boat Show and used it for shrimping. You absolutely need an electric pot puller for shrimping. Believe me, I've pulled some pots by hand and it's no fun pulling up those things from 300+ feet down.

You do have to use a Scotty plug inlet (they call it a receptacle) in order for it to work. While you're at it, you may as well buy a Scotty Downrigger too. :wink

Actually since you're already buying Cannon Downriggers (which are pretty cool btw), you could probably buy a Scotty Tilt-up Mounting Bracket and mount it directly to your boat (similar to what Breausaw did in the pic above) and just install a Scotty inlet somewhere in your gunnel. I did it last year on my little 16' angler, then changed the plugs on my downriggers and change out the receptacles on our 22' Cruiser. Very easy to do. The new style plugs already come equipped on the new Ace Line Haulers so you don't need to change those out. The mount and receptacle will probably set you back about $60 or so.

Since shrimping season is closed, you could wait until the SBS and buy it then. I guess it depends on where you live and how quickly you want to use it. But of course, you'll want to attend the SBS anyway and meet all of us fine C-Brats! :smiled

Good luck in your decision.

<<on edit>> Sorry Tom, I didn't see that you basically already answered the question. Ooops....

Peter brought up a good point. You are in california and won't be shrimping. so the question is how deep are crab on the coast? how heavy are the pots. I don't use the pot puller for crab much. even at a 100ft i can pull by hand. so all you may really need is a scotty trap ease link

this will keep your line off the side of your boat.

I just looked at the Link that you sent me and I'm starting to think that I may just go with Scotty Trap-Ease Pot Puller because for 600 dollars I'm sure that I can find something else to invest in other than that. I'm not really sure on the weight or depth but will start asking around. The exercise will probably do me good.

Thanks for the info,

Kevin

I just bought an Ace off of C-List for $350! Only used twice, looks new and in the bag etc. The guy lost all his pots first time and got so PO'd he sold the puller; his loss, my gain.

My question: those of you w/ 25's how do you mount the Scotty base? The rails make mounting a challenge.

You can always pull the pots with a buoy, I did for a couple of years and still pull my anchor with one.
You can use one of these:
Our use this one:

Once you have it attached to your line just take off, the buoy feeds back and the pots come to the surface, just don’t go too fast. I usually pulled at about 4 to 5mph and never damaged a pot; that was with 4 shrimp pots on a line.
