Any C-Brats in Fairbanks, AK?

Hey Everyone-

Are there any C-Brats in Fairbanks, AK? There is a 1987 C-Dory for sale there. Unfortunately, the owner passed and his family is trying to sell the boat and doesn't know much about the boat (ie is it a Classic or modern Cruiser). The son, who flew in a few weeks ago, said that the internet there is very poor and he is unable to send photos.

So, I was wondering if there was anyone out there that would be able to take a quick look and let me know.

Also, would you know of a licensed surveyor in the area?

Thanks everyone,
Randy Short

Hey there! Thanks for the quick reply.

The ad was posted this evening. I talked to the son, Lance Nutter (really nice guy) and I didn't get the father's name (he passed a couple of weeks ago). Here's the ad as it was posted on Craigslist:

22 feet C-Dory Cruiser, EZ-Load galvanized trailer with current tags, 90 hp Honda with about 200 hours; BRAND NEW gears and lower unit rebuilt (receipts available) by The Boat Shop in Fairbanks, 9.9 Johnson trolling motor, VHF, Garmin GPS, Fish/Depth, heater, stove, porta-jon. Wonderful boat, with many extras. This boat has no problems; meticulously maintained; Death in family forces sale. $28,000, or make an offer. Fairbanks area. If interested call 907-488-3482

That's all I currently have. First I wanted to find out if there was anyone out there who could help then I was going to call and follow up with the guy to set up some times to take a look.

I've never had to buy anything long distance before so I'm not sure how to handle it and not sound like a scammer or a thief

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's a long shot, but perhaps try calling "The Boat Shop" since they did recent work on the engine, they may know some history of the boat.

Hey Everyone-

Thanks for all of your help. I was actually able to talk with a guy at The Boat Shop in Fairbanks who was able to give me the low down on this boat. The Boat Shop has been doing the maintenance on this boat for the last 10 years and he had a good history on it.

The next problem is the bank... They want a survey by a licensed surveyor (~$800), not an appraisal. So I'm trying to figure out if I have enough cash lying around  Or, should I say, enough cash that the wife will let me have

I have a couple of additional questions that I will put in a different post.

Again, thanks everyone!

Randy,

The Boat Shop did the appraisal on our 16' Cruiser. There were no boat surveyors in the Fairbanks area. AlaskaUSA worked with us to get all the paperwork done for the loan. It took almost an entire day before we were able to complete the transaction, but the appraisal was sufficient for them.

Thanks bjidzik-

I just got off the phone with Alaska Pacific Bank. They had called a few banks in the Fairbanks area to see what they do as a standard practice. APB was told pretty much what you just said. So, APB has a call in to the appraiser that the banks in Fairbanks recommend to find out the "detail" of the appraisal.

I think that APB might okay the loan with just the appraisal. We shall see.

I spoke with the owner this morning; they are sending pictures to my email and I'll post them, if you like.

The Boat Shop in Fairbanks used to be a C-Dory dealer (in the Interior of AK we're about 350 miles from the ocean and the C-Dory isn't intended for Alaska rivers, so couldn't meet the factory requirement of 10 sales per year. However, they do have a good rep. and have done some great work for me.

Hey Everyone-

Again, a really big thank you for all the PM's, emails and posts, but the boat has been sold.

It was posted on Craigslist last night and I was the first one to call on it. The guy said it had been posted for only about 10 minutes. So, I spoke with him and got as much info as he had. This morning I called the mechanic that had serviced the boat for the last 10 years to fill in the blanks for me. Then I called my bank to get the final okay.

When I called back around noon today it had been sold, but I don't know for how much. By my estimation, it had been up for sale for about 10 hour when it sold. The mechanic, who is also a certified appraiser, said it was worth between $20K-$22K. I would have offered $22K and paid up to $24K.

Oh well. I guess I need to figure out a way to get "cash-in-hand" as I've missed out on 4 C-Dory's in as many weeks by having to get an appraisal and/or wait for the bank. It's starting to get a little frustrating.

Anyway, thanks everyone.

CD 22s sell fast in Alaska. And I anticipate that their value is going to actually go up or hold fast because they are so darn efficient (that is getting more and more important by the day) when compared to other boats of a similar size. I know I love mine. Good luck in your hunt! I bet now that you have financing all taken care of you will have one soon.

Hey T.R.-

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I know I'll get one soon. As for the financed part, it's all subjective. I'm "pre-approved" from the bank for up to $45K. The contingent on the "pre-approval" is that the boat must appraise/survey for that amount. The reason I've missed out on the previous boats is because they don't have a current appraisal/survey and before I can arrange to get one, someone else shows up with cash-in-hand and then I'm left still looking for a boat.

In any case, I know I'll get one... someday.

Their is one thing you could do and that is give the seller a downpayment (make it refundable in the contract terms if things don't pan out) and ask them if it would be ok to take their boat to an appraiser because this is a requirement for your bank. I would be ok with that if I were selling mine. Without a doubt $30,000 bucks is a lot of money for a boat - especially one that old.....probably more than they paid for it, in fact! I remember at the boat shows in the early/mid 90s they were asking mid 30s for them, late 80s had to be somewhat less for sure. But, that is not the point, these are fine boats and I would bet that most sellers would be willing to have their boat taken in for an appraisal - if not, well there's a red flag isn't there? Once again, best of luck.
