Another Webasto furnace install

Well, it looks like you have the boat just about perfect now... SO, what is the next boat going to be?

Anyway, all joking aside I like your Webasto install and I am going to crawl into Levitation in a few minutes and see if there is a chance to do a similar installation... I have the heat pump / air conditioner, which is fine at the dock or if you want to run the generator...
And I have the heater from the engine coolant when underway, but it would be nice to have a low current draw source of heat when away from the dock...

BTW, a total aside - I have coming a number of LED lights from MarineBeam

http://store.marinebeam.com/

to replace the anchor light, side marker lights, and all internal lighting (numerous lights)... This should radically decrease my current draw at night... I am going to make an amperage measurement before and after... Probably will post it over on Tugnuts.... I already have the anchor light replaced and it is a radical improvement in both visibility and lowered current draw... Don't fall for the cheap stuff, Jeff at Marinebeam is an expert and a good guy...

Denny-o - all my interior lights are type 1004. You would think that if Marinebeam wanted to make it easy for me to find what I need, they would say "Direct replacement for 1004 bulbs" or something like that. A search on Marinebeam for "1004" returns "Sorry, no matches." You might mention that to them if you talk to them from time to time, as it sounds like you do...

Warren,
The picture showing the sliding storage racks is an old picture just showing how they still fit in. The second pic shows where the 10 L diesel tank is.
I will take another picture of how it is now and replace the 3rd pic.

Great install David. Makes me wonder how it would work on a TC255. Any TomCat owners willing to be the test boat. Maybe one of the Rogers?

Here is the picture of the galley cabinet as it is now.

OK, great. So what is underneath the fuel tank? Does the pot and pan area extend to the left under the fuel tank?

Would you give up your Wallas? I don't think I would.

Warren

Warren,

No need to give up the Wallas. Mount the Webasto like David did. Use it to heat the cabin, the Wallas to cook. There is another heater called the Airsnugger, looks like the Espar or Wabasto, but sells on eBay for $650.00. Probably a China knock-off.

So far we have not been cold enough to want something more than the Wallas. That may change after we go to Alaska, though!

Warren,

Living on the boat for 60+ days in BC, in 2006, we often wished for some dry heat. The Wallas was not up to the task. No need for a hot cook-top, if a dedicated heater was available.

Is the Webasto as noisy as the Wallas is with the lid down?

This is the first I've ever heard of the Airhugger so I did a quick Google Search and results 1 and 2 were in Anchorage and Vancouver, my hometown (could be a Google Location Thing :disgust ).

@ $750-$800

Thanks Brent

Anyway, here's a couple of screen captures for those interested.

This is the Vancouver, Washington Dealer

Is the Webasto as noisy as the Wallas is with the lid down?

Not in my opinion. And I have had the Wallas in a 22 and then in the 25. Most of the "fan" noise and combustion noise is outside. Can't really hear it in the cabin. My combustion air intake is routed to the cockpit and you can hear it there. What I hear inside is the fuel pump. The Wallas also had a pump, and I could hear it, but it was less than the Webasto.
Today I remounted the fuel pump for the Webasto. It was previously mounted with a 1/4" bolt through the 3/4" plywood wall inside the galley cabinet. The sound was amplified by the fact that it was mounted on the plywood, sort of like a sounding board.. The constant cycling of the little solonoid piston fuel pump was a little distracting and I thought I could nulify it somewhat with some sort of a dampening mount.
I found a 2" rubber plug and drilled a hole in the middle for the mounting bolt. Drilled a 2" hole through the 3/4" plywood and seated the rubber plug into the hole. It seems a little less noisy now.

Heck, after a day on the water I should be able to sleep through anything. But, alas, I sometimes can't. Too many years having to respond to fire department pagers in the middle of the night. I hear every little thing. But that is what Gin is for.

Yes. The floor that the slide outs are mounted on, and the new fuel tank is mounted on covers the whole area from the aft wall of the head to the forward wall that has the refer on the other side.

Actually, David designed that under-galley arrangement with the elevated floor and hinged door to access beneath it. David described it to Andrew Custis when he was at the Auburn C-Dory factory, Andrews said "No problem," and had the cabinet guy build it that way for both David's and my boats. I think Patty found the slide-outs, they are by Rev-a-shelf.

I have been shopping for a diesel heater for the TomCat. I have bid on several Espar D2 and Webasto Airtronic 2000 units on Ebay. I was successful last week and scored an Espar D2 complete kit for $720.00. It arrived today and looks great. I am now shopping for a thru hull and a fuel tank. I may need some additional 60mm heater hose also, as I plan to run hot air to the berth as well as the floor in front of the galley. We will be in Texas for at least two more months, so the install in the TomCat will be in April.

Any issue w/ cabinet strength/flex across the front w/ that piece (mullion) removed? I've always hated that thing in our boat; it cuts the cabinet opening in half making getting stuff out a PIA.
