Another Stupid Question - Mounting a Kicker on CD25

OK, when we had Les do the electronics on Daydream, we also had him install a kicker bracket. It is a fixed bracket, he said it would work fine, we would just need to get an extra long shaft, but my question has nothing to do with shaft length! I have borrowed a Honda 15, and when we tried to mount it on the bracket, (A) the bracket sits too low to tighten the clamps, even doing the half turn and flip over routine, and more seriously perhaps (2) when the tiller handle is down, you can turn the motor towards the main motor, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to turn it the other way. This problem would exist no matter what the length of the shaft is. Maybe (A) can be handled by a little shim, I don't know, and certainly don't think that should be necessary, but I see NO solution to (2) other than running with the tiller handle in the up position - people don't do that, do they? What am I missing here?

Pat-

Is the kicker bracket on the port side of the boat or the starboard side?

If it's on the port side, the handle must be carried in the "Up" position, and the motor steered with a connecting rod.

Even with the motor on the starboard side, much the same will be true. The only way to steer with the regular kicker tiller handle is to have the motor mounted along side the main motor on the regular transom in the engine well so that the tiller handle can be swung through a reasonable arc.

Otherwise, some form of remote steering must be used, usually a connecting rod between the kicker and the main motor.

Long and extra long shafts (20" and 25" as opposed to 15" for regular) are extensions below the powerhead and motor clamps that affect the reach of the motor below, but do not change the height of the powerhead or it's connections, thus the tiller usage is often blocked by the transom height of the boat when the motor is not mounted in the engine well itself.

I'm not sure what's happening with the height of the tightening clamps as I cannot visualize it.

Pat,
I know that this is not quite the same scenario to what your situation is, but on my 16' I had the kicker mounted on the transom (on the starboard side) next to the main 50HP. I had to bungee the tiller/handle in the "up" position so the engine could swing its' arc unimpeded. (The kicker was attached to the main by a connecting rod for steerage).
(Of course on the 22', I now have the twin Johnson's and no kickeroo.... :wink )

BTW, have a safe and eventful (aka: fun) cruise this weekend!

Here is a picture of my bracket sort of. Not sure if your's is similar. Les installed mine. The handle can hit the main motor when down. I have a TR-1 gold and use that for steering. I keep the handle in the up position.

I think I have some more close up pictures of the bracket on my home computer I could post if that would help.

Pat here is a picture of the set up on our boat.

I use an tiller extension to steer from the cockpit. I have to tilt the tiller 45 degrees to be able to steer stop to stop. I also have a rod that lets me steer with the main. I think the extension will solve your problem.

OK, thanks, kicker is at Fall City, I am at Birch Bay now. I see that the tiller cannot be down, so we will try again when we get home to get this puppy mounted. BTW, swim step is on starboard, kicker bracket is on port.

Flapbreaker,
How do you like the TR1 Gold? I've given some though to putting it on my CD 25 but they are kinda pricey and I'm wondering if they are worth it.

Pat,
I have to tilt up the tiller handle on my kicker to steer lock to lock. Its no biggy.

Ron, Although they are expensive I cannot imagine ever going without one again. Fishing is so different now. It's like you have someone doing the steering for you. Sometimes when I'm trolling I'll stand there thinking "shouldn't I be doing something?" It's nice to be able to rig up other lines or just drink a cup of coffee without going off course by even a degree. THe unit works as advertised. It holds a heading even with swells/ waves and wind. I have the NMEA information going to my c-80 display so I can even have it troll toward a waypoint or circle one for that matter. I wouldn't waste my money on the wireless controller as that's the only part I've heard negative things about. Also the do run some specials before christmas and towards the end of summer. I think I saved about $200 just before Christmas.

Just a different approach. When we got the boat at C-Dory, Scott installed a Garelick adjustable motor mount, and sold us a Honda 9.9. Fits well, and the mount easily raises and lowers the motor. I beleive it'll hold the 15.

We got the 9.9 because we can also use it on the inflatable. Since Honda engines are heavier than sin (wait, is sin heavy?) I built a hoist that will do the job. demountable and dissabmelable, so it can be stored belowdecks. Tried it out yesterday, with a proof test, and it lifted about 200 lbs. So now we've got a bi-modal motor, that we can store on the boat.

I'll post a picture of the hoist and motor mount, soon.

Sin must be heavy - it sure has contributed to my weight  !

Ron,

I know several people that have TR1's on their boats. They all agree with what was said above about them. No one would even consider not having one on their next boat! It is definitely on my long wish list!
