Another newbie...in need of assistance

This must be an FAQ or something...just point me in the right direction.

Anyway, here's the executive summary, for you executives:
I need to take my wife out on a C-Dory 22 Cruiser so she can see what the heck I'm going to spend my money on.

A bit of introduction:
I grew up in Portland, OR, and every summer when I was a kid, we would trail our FiberForm 20' cabin cruiser up to Anacortes and spend two or three weeks cruising. Not to put too fine a point on it, but...those are some of the absolute happiest childhood memories I possess.

Now I have young children of my own, age 6 and 3. It's time. I live in Seattle now...the cruising ground starts right here in my backyard, and extends north and south for mile upon mile, and I have no boat. It's time.

My marine resume looks like this:
Power: I was just a kid in the 1970s, but I paid attention on our little cruiser. So I entered adulthood with some notion of the basics of navigation and small boat handling, along with lots of experience with (summertime) cruising in the San Juans. Otherwise, our home water was the Columbia River, and honestly, other than a couple of overnights up the river, we mostly just ran across to Government Island and played in the sand.

Fast forward a decade...

I moved to Seattle in 1992, and discovered sailing that spring. I was deeply into bicycling, and the idea of crossing stretches of water without burning any petroleum enchanted me. I took lessons. I made friends. I crewed on several racing boats on Lake Washington and Puget Sound. J/24s, J/35s, trimarans, larger boats, and my own Laser. Decided to try ocean passagemaking, and have accumulated something like 4,500 bluewater miles over three trips, on three different boats. One delivery home from Hawaii, and two trips down the coast from Port Angeles, to San Francisco and San Diego, respectively. So I like to think I know SOMETHING about boats and the water.

And now it's time for me to get a boat I can take my family cruising in. A pocket cruiser, along the lines of the little 20-footer we had when I was a kid. A power boat, because these kids will be ready to go home by the time I get a sailboat rigged. I'm a big believer in small boats. I love exploring the tiny places you just can't get to with a larger boat. I've seen many of my sailing friends over-buy, ending up with large, expensive boats they don't end up using as much as they thought they would. Then I see these boats go up for sale a few years later. I don't want to do that; I don't want "too much boat". I want "just enough boat".

The C-Dories are essentially the only boats I've seen that really appeal to me and seem well-suited to my intended use. Well, the C-Dories and those other Toland-designed boats whose name starts with C (I've been lurking here long enough to know when to play it coooool :smiled ). But I just don't want to buy new. I know enough about boats, see, to know that I'm going to learn a lot from my first boat of this type, and that I am too inexperienced, at this point, to make all the right decisions if I were outfitting a brand new boat. So I want a nice, recent-model used boat, and I'll live with the previous owner's decisions, and maybe those are just fine for me. If and when I decide they aren't, THEN I can have my own "perfect" boat built.

Meanwhile, my wife is a landlubber, and she gets seasick pretty easily. But she enjoys boats and she enjoys camping...as long as the weather's good, she gets a shower periodically, and there's a place to go potty. The CD 22 Cruiser seems to me to be the minimum boat that we and our small kids could use and enjoy the way I envision.

So now, back to the request for assistance: Is anybody willing to take me and my wife out on their CD22 cruiser sometime this fall? I know, you don't know me from Adam. I'm not Adam, though. I'm Tim. Hi. It's very nice to meet you. :-)

You posted this about 45 minutes ago. Despite the hour, I can virtually guarantee you'll have multiple offers for rides within the next few days or so. How do I know?

I'm in roughly the same position as you, except reversed. Grew up in Seattle, took lessons in El Toros, crewed for sailboat races on Puget Sound, moved to Bay area and raced in S.F. Bay and up and down the local Pacific Coast. Also bought a 470 and raced it together with my 16-yr old son. And now I live in Portland!

Long story short; After lurking the C-Brat site, and attending several boat shows, last Feb I e-mailed a local C-Dory owner at about 12:30 AM on a Friday night. Almost exactly the same request as yours.

We were on the water by noon Saturday!! And had never met before!! (Thanks JohnF!)

Since then my wife and I have attended a mid-winter C-Brat dinner (just to visit), and in April a C-Brat weekend at Cathlamet. We enjoyed a great potluck dinner, and got rides on both a CD-22 (Doghouse; thanks Kevin and Tammy!) and a CD-25 (Helen O'; thanks Larry and Helen!).

So, let's see if my prediction comes true . . .

Tim,
You are a perfect candidate for a C-Dory. Wish I was nearby so I could take you out on ours. We have two girls, now 9 and 6, and have had a 22 for the past 5 years. The girls love it and we use it the way you intend -- short trips, some overnighters, lots of beaching it and picnicking, and excursions by road to distant waters with the C-Dory in tow (e.g., Outer Banks, NC; Lake Winnipesaukee, NH; Nova Scotia, Canada). These places take on a new dimension when you have you own boat to poke around on. Have a wonderful time!
Best wishes,

Tim,

Like Tom, I wish we were closer - we would love to take you out and extoll C-Dory virtues, etc. I'm sure someone will rise to the occasion.

We don't have any children at home any more (heh, heh, heh...) but I can address the sea sickness situation. Sandy was sometimes prone to motion sickness - but has NEVER run into it on the C-Dory (over 500 hours now). I don't know why, but that's the situation. My guess is the kindly motion of the boat and the fact that visibility is excellent.

As you get further into C-Dory shopping, among all the items you will be confronting, I strongly urge you to consider the benefits of good canvas (which happily can be retrofitted, etc). On a boat the size of a C-Dory (we have the 22) it nearly doubles your living space, and in marginal or skunky weather that can be a REAL blessing. (And with the C-Dory's high gunnels - would give the kids a little more room-to-roam.) Sounds like you're looking for a vessel for cruising/boatcamping vs. fishing, so canvas will be a great help.

Also - whoever first described the C-Dory as a VW Camper on the water was precisely on target. Small, well layed-out, functional ... makes me wonder if Toland isn't German? (...to me, that's a Good Thing.)

Anyway, Good Hunting.

Tim, I just noticed a 22 C-Dory in the C-Dory's for sale column that's for sale in Anacortes. I'd bet he would love to demo the boat and then drop it off at your house!
Good luck and welcome.

Tim,
Welcome and good luck finding your boat! We purchased a 2004 model on April 3rd of 2005...have never regretted the decision since! We don't have kids but our nieces (13 and 7) toured the San Juans with us last fall and absolutely loved it! They have since moved from Lacey, WA to Helena, MT and the 8 year (now) still asks when she can go boating again with us. I'm sure you and your family will enjoy!

Iggy,
Glad to have you on the boat and good to see your post! Haven't been on the site much over the summer, busy and all, but did go from Tigard up to the Sequim gathering. Had a great time! Hope all is well

Hey, I would be more than happy to take you out on our boat. Send me a personal message and we can setup a time. I am sure that you will find that these boats are 'just enough' boat, and more.

Corwin

JUST AS I PREDICTED!

Within 7 hours there were two offers for rides! Of course Tim is in Seatlle, one offer was in VA, and the other in AZ. But I'm sure the offers are sincere; Tim just needs to add a plane ride to the boat ride!

Other offers appeared later, so I'm sure Tim will be out on the water before long.

Ed

Yeah...hey, thanks everyone. I also got another offer (from Friday Harbor) via private message.

Corwin, I sent you a message earlier today, before I'd seen your note here. I'd love to bring the whole family up, even with this crappy weather. Part of the attraction of the C-Dory is the potential for year-round marine exploration, so I don't mind a little wind and rain. Your boat is just a little newer (and therefore a little more expensive) than I had been thinking, but I'm on the brink of talking myself into it. :-)

Tim

Wow, what a day. We piled into the car and headed north. Stopped at Twin Bridges Marina and met Corwin by coincidence. He was out there showing the boat. Took a look at Little Catelyn, but at a distance since Corwin was busy with potential buyers.

Then we walked down to the other end of the building and talked to Scott about some other boats that shall remain nameless, and then back into the car.

Down the road, across Deception Pass, and down the hill to see Les at EQ Marine. By the way, Cornet Bay is absolutely lovely...a person could do a hell of a lot worse than to create a lifestyle for themself that involved spending a lot of time alongside Cornet Bay. Anyway, we show up unannounced, I introduce myself to Les and let him know that I'm NOT in the market for a new boat, and he proceeds to show me around and talk with me for the better part of an hour. I can see why folks like dealing with him!

After that, we took some time to let the kids run around at Rosario Beach. The kids amused themselves in a driftwood fort for an hour while we got to TALK...a rare luxury for us. She did not grow up boating, or even camping, so this whole "living on a boat for days at a time" concept is unfamiliar territory for her.

So we learned a lot, but we did not get out on the water today. I've got a couple offers (thanks folks!), but nobody closer than Twin Bridges, so far. Anyone in Edmonds or Ballard? Or across the way at Kingston? Up the road in Everett? :-)
