Way off topic, but does anbody know anything about these?
I certainly don't need another boat, but I've found what appears to be a deal too good to pass up.
225hp I/O V8
OMC outdrive
Dbl. axle trailer
Pics show it to be in fairly decent shape, and a bit of research seems to indicate that this is a 100% fg composite boat that most say is built like a tank.
$1500

The boat might be a deal or not . The OMC outdrive will be a nightmare

If you do buy it check out what yr drive is it the Cobra drive or the 800 series with big rubber boot around it??On the old 800 series the tilt mechanism was tied somehow to the Stringers on the AMC boat .Also trying to find parts for a 30 yr old system could take time and $
On second thought scap the outdrive and buy a bracket and put an outboard on Good Luck in your decision

Yes that is the older series 800 well try it make sure it runs and if not a bracket is about $1000-1500 for a single eng and nice 150 4stroke would move that boat nicely . Those boats were built pretty stout if memory serves me it would be a great project boat for sure . Does the trailer come with it ? if so not a bad deal

Yes, the trailer is included. The ad was placed by a 3rd party, and "they" indicated that the engine will "turn over" but will need new plugs and plug wires, and new batteries. The actual owner has not used the boat in several years due to a spouse developing cancer.

I would stay as many states away from that boat as I could . I believe I am 2 states away now . That's a huge money pit if Ive ever seen one . There is no sense in buying a boat with totally obsolete powertrain in today's market.
Unless you have an equal and endless supply of time and money and a quest for conquering and restoring mediocrity, look for a backyard Bertram or Albin or Shamrock or Mako or Seacraft or something with undying character and an active owners group.Just my 0.175 dollar opinion .

I think Marc hit it right on as far as the OMC drive (30yrs old)is concerned that was my take after thinking about it. also If you must have the boat put a outboard on it . When you figure $1500 or so for a bracket and another 5000-8000 for maybe a used outboard Marc is probably right Your $1500 boat turns out to be $10,000 boat real quick for that there are a lot of boats down here in fl that you could get yourself . a Boat trader from florida or look it up Boatrader.com there's lots of boats that could be had . Sorry to bust that boat bubble

No position on your decision, just a comment on mine...
Tripped over a 1966 Skipper (14 foot runabout) with a Chrysler 45 hp OB engine.. All original... In good shape cosmetically... It had been stored for 18 years, 'but the engine ran last year when my son tried it', says he (the preacher selling it)... Well I hope he goes to a warm place in the end... Anyway, gave him $500 and hauled it home...

My son and I are good mechanics... There is no way that engine ran last year, or any other year... Long story short, last night - after having spent weeks completely rebuilding the mags, points, carb, fuel pump, hoses, gaskets, etc. ad nauseum it finally fired up and does run - hooray... Well, except for the minor issue that the lower unit (gear box) is junk and beyond repair (rust) and I need to scratch up a replacement and rebuild that - sigh... Parts for a 43 year old engine are not exactly common... Anyway, it has been a fun project so far and we may even get it into the water before freeze up... It will be unique amongst today's, super sculpted, heavily upholstered, Italian designed torpedoes, that dominate the waterways, with it's upright wind screen, bright red deck, white hull, and green seats, pushed along by that square box, smoking motor, of yesteryear... CARB3 approved, it ain't...

Well, I'm still considering it, I have no idea why. Maybe if I could get my money back out of the engine and outdrive (at something less than the $1500 asking price)...then I'd keep the rest for something to do.I could likely build an OB bracket myself.
Maybe I should take the wife's advice and ban myself from online classified sites.

Come on, Marc, don't be so shy! Tell what you really think!

Snal: every now and then we just get an itch and have to scratch it. This may be your case right now. Looking at the trailer, I'd be cautious on the haul home....if...the boat has not been used in a few years....my bet it the trailer has not either...meaning dry rotted tires, wheel bearings and stuff not in good shape...yada yada. Hey, it already has an outboard bracket on it.

I'd go with mounting a good new 4 stroke out back too. You could always have a nice fishing spot if ya sink the current power system in a nice place.

Now, this is from a guy who spent boo-koo on a sweet 18' C-Dory Angler... but, in the end, I had one sweet boat...still much less exspensive than if I had just chunked down and bought a new boat, and the fun and experience of building her out.

Most any old boat that you have to re-power will cost you the same... meaning... a 4 stroke motor, new batteries, remote and gauges for the motor and all are going to cost the same...no matter what you put them on. A new or used trailer are going to cost the same...no matter what you put them under.

If you proceed, look at it like you are buying the hull. And, if you make it home with the trailer without the boat coming off of it and going into on going traffic....well... then you have a hull in your yard....and the rest of the project is up to you.

We all need some type of project now and then.

Byrdman

Byrdman, all of my life I have had at least one project of some sort at any given time. Some I have lost interest in, some are still around. I enjoy them, and finished or not...I usually end up getting my money back at the very least. I kinda have a knack for that.
Friends and family never understand why I typically sell the projects that I've had, they can't understand the "fun" that I have, without getting too "attached" to most of them.
This one is on the back burner, but still on the stove, I actually have a member here that is interested in sharing the project.
I'm also looking at a Nimble Arctic project boat. Those Nimbles have always made me drool.

If you decide to take this on there is a very helpful website which covers not only building new but repaining old boats. They are the reason I own a C-Dory, one of the boats I had wanted to build was styled after the 16, unfortunately I'm very allergic to epoxy, didn't figure that out until I was halfway into the build of a 14' practice boat.

Anyway, give them a look see. bateau.com

Thanks!...have had that site in my favorites for several years :D . Before I found out about the C Dory, I was going to start with a SkiffAmerica build. I ordered plans, check one out down in Charleston, and still may build one someday.
