Alternatives to C-Dory?

My comment was directed at the hangers-on that, after deciding to not buy a C-Dory, show no respect that this is an owners group, not just any boaters forum.
I'm with you all the way Roger. Yes, there are a lot of good boats out there. Each person must decide what fits their needs. If C-Dory isn't a good fit, no problem. Just remember that's your personal decision based on your own set of needs. The majority of C-Dory owners on this site love their C-Dory's, despite any "problems" which may arise. Roger (C-Hawk) is a perfect example. Despite the multitudes of problems and broken promises he's encountered trying to take delivery of his new boat, he is still a loyal C-Dory owner to the core.

Hey Karl, I'm located at the juntion of the Erie canal and the Hudson River in Waterford, NY. My 16' C-Dory cruizer wants to go out after work everyday. Give me a PM and I would enjoy taking you out to see the sights and check out the boat. I have a Rosborough also, but the 16 seems to be out more. Hopefully the Rosborough does not get jealous seeing the little C-dory out playing all the time. As someone mentioned on this thread, summer is short as is life, so......

We too saw our first cdory in l982 and from then till 2003 worked toward a purchase. What a boat and dream come true. Like El and Bill and almost all the others we couldn't be more happy with our choice. Not that some haven't had legitimate problems that could have been better handled by the manufacturer or dealer. We did consider the Almar with the diesel and Hamilton jet drive, but with the price difference it would have been another l9 year wait if ever. With very little previous boating experience the 22 ft CD has taken us on adventures that with out photos and video would be very hard to believe and kept us comfortable and safe in the process. We looked into a lot of other boats in different ways similar to the 22 ft. CD. Nothing else for the price came even close to matching our intended use and we have not seen any of the problems described by other's other than some minor gel coat cracking and with what we have subjected the boat to in trailering and use I've been amazed at how it has stood up.

Karl I hope your final choice ends up making you as pleased as we have been in ours.

As far as the non cdory owners hanging about after making another boat their choice. Personally have not seen it being a problem. Most if not all have to me been postings interesting or informative with sometimes another needed and to me welcomed view point thown in. Of course this site is mainly about and for us CD owners, but I think a ray of occational deversity adds more than distracts and would seem self limiting without the non-welcome sign being held out.

Has anyone ever heard of a boat maker known as Monterey Bay? There is a 31 footer listed on YW and it sure looks like either a C-dory or a SeaSport or the like. Any information about them? It looks like a lot of boat for the asking price......

Westfield 11-

Is this the boat you're talking about?

Full add and photos link: 31' MONTEREY BAY Pilothouse Utility Express w/TRAILER

If so, the ad talks about the builder: (Appears to be a small custom build to order outfit in Santa Cruz, Ca. Lots of those small operations there!)

" She is one of 29 high quality Pilot House utility vessels of this model built by the Monterey Boat Company of Santa Cruz, California, for heavy-duty coastal commercial/recreational applications."

Year: 1991
Current Price: US$ 29,950
Located In North San Francisco Bay, CA
Hull Material: Fiberglass
Engine/Fuel Type: Twin Gas/Petrol
YW# 1741-1465918

You're really right about "a lot of boat for the money", a whole lot! Would like to see it in person!

THIS IS A PART OF A LOT OF VERY GOOD DEALS ON FISHING BOATS HERE IN CALIFORNIA AND PART OF OREGON DUE TO THE TOTAL SALMON CLOSURE.

Yes- with all due respect- remember that this is a C-Dory Owner's Group.
All lookers are welcome to browse and research whether or not the C-Dory will work for them. There are several makes of boats on the market that are great boats, and some have owner's groups as well.
If you decide that a C-Dory is not right for you, we can understand :( - but please respect that this is a forum for the owners of C-Dory boats. :)

I recall this being the 2nd time you have been provactive with me. Perhaps you have a mindframe that tolerates little to no diversity....so be it.

Nonetheless, please try to consider these facts!

1. The original post asked for opinions of other boats. I've owned a few and feel qualified to speak about them along with my current boat, so I did. This is a discussion forum....correct?

2. My '98 Campion was purchased for 16k which was a steal. It required another 2k in improvements and minor repairs. Now I have a very clean, mechanically sound, pilothouse boat with a high quality aluminum trailer for 18k. Is there a 22' CD on the market for 18k that's in similar or superior condition. Nope....not then, not now.

Had 40-50k been my budget, then I'd considered a CD or Skagit or SeaSport or Glacier Bay, etc. Instead, this Campion came up within my price range and I bought it within 3 days of availability. I drove solo from Portland to San Diego and back within a weekend to retrieve it. I knew what I wanted, what I could afford, and bit hard when something like it became available.

3. Campion does not have an owner group. This forum is attractive to me because of the focus on trailerable cruiser boating along with the expertise and kindness of the majority who post here. In about 5 years, I will be making another boating purchase, likely having a 100k to spend. I certainly will consider a CD then. Until then, I must be content with my Campion while wishing I could buy Bob Austin's CD 25, when he (and his CD) visits CW (another non-CD owner) and me later this month.

Or as you said....be a "hanger on."

I don't understand the intolerance either, this was posted in the "General Chat" forum, which I consider open to all things boating.

We also have a forum called "All C-Dorys, all the time" which is pretty self explanatory. Being exclusionary in that forum makes sense, but not in the General Chat forum.
