We gave up on sailing and wanted something smaller and simpler. Compromised with a fishing boat that my wife named "Miss Take". Had read about C-Dories and thought that might be the solution, but had never seen one in person. Started stalking the C-Brat forum and decided to attend the nearest gathering. We brought items to Florida for the auction and participated in most of the activities. I'm not sure if it was the boats or the people that convinced us that a C-Dory was the boat for us. We wanted simplicity and easy launching so we let it be known that we were interested in buying a C-Dory 16 Cruiser.
Meanwhile Joyce Jordan-Peak told some people that her friends, Lyle and Janda Raker, had decided that they need to sell their 16 cruiser. Tom Schulke introduced Joyce to us as we gathered around the campfire. After hearing that we were from Texas Joyce excitedly told us that Lyle and Janda's boat was in Texas. Our excitement faded when we realized that although in the same state it was still about 600 miles away. Then after a few phone calls and e-mails with photos, we made the trip to Amarillo.
Janda had not only written about the wonderful experiences they had with "See-Saw" but revealed the flaws so there were no surprises. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit and marveled at their lifetime of unique experiences before and after acquiring the C-Dory.
Lyle had the boat and trailer as ready as possible without actually testing the engine. (The outboard had not been started in about 3 years due to some complications Lyle experienced after neck surgery.) We took the boat to a local boat shop with a test tank. They were able to start the engine but detected a problem with the fuel system. They said they had about three week backlog of work but to leave the boat there so that it would be available to work on when the parts came in. That 3 weeks turned into about 9 weeks but we finally got the call that See-Saw was ready.
The little C-Dory attracted quite a bit of attention while at the shop. The shop owner sail that they could have sold the Dory twice while it was there.
See-Saw is now in her new home. No grand adventures yet, just slowly and comfortably cruising around Lake Livingston.
