adding radar on top of cabin

Will radar interfere with reception of hockey puck gps receiver mounted flush on forward cabin roof.
 
My Furuno radar is mounted on an arch at the aft edge of the cabin, and my Garmin antenna sits on the shelf inside the forward part of the cabin. No interference to either unit, and BTW the antenna mounted inside the cabin works fine. I didn't have the heart to punch a hole in my roof.

Radar these days operates at X-Band (10.5 GHz) and GPS operates at 1.56 GHz. These frequencies are far enough apart so they shouldn't interfere.

And I have the GPS right next to the radar. No problem.

I had a Raymarine 2KW on on a 10" high mount on Captain's Choice and a puck on a 5" stick about 3 feet away with no problems. On Captain's Cat, I'm about to mount the Raymarine 4KW on a 4" mount but the GPS will be above it on a 90degree thingy that comes out of the back of the mount. Don't expect any problems.

On a similar topic...I plan to mount a 4KW radar and a tri-lens radar reflector on the roof of my Cat. I plan to mount the radome at least 10" above the roof and I planned to mount the radar reflector at the base of this mount right at the roof. Installed the top of the reflector will reach about 8".

I know you would not want any large radar reflective surfaces in close proximity and in line of sight to the radar, but would a radar signal from another vessel "bounce up" from my reflector and hit my radome such that it would cause damage? I planned to mount the GPS receiver flush to the roof as well. The only thing that would be in the line of site of the radar signal would be the VHF antenna.

My GPS puck is on the shelf inside the cabin, and my radar is on a pedestal almost directly above it and a little way aft.

No more so than the direct signal from the other vessel's radar that is hitting your antenna directly.

Wow....you are of course right.....duh....momentary brain cramp. (It also turns out a ton of bricks weighs the same as a ton of feathers ;) Ha ha!

I was initially thinking about the possibility of a concentrated beam due to the highly reflective nature of the tri-lens reflector...etc....over analyzing.

The only radar that could do any harm would be a military radar. The AEGIS phased arrays can kill seagulls at close range! :shock: :bat :smileo
 
The Tri Lense reflector does not really concentrate the beam to the extent that it is any more than the inital pulse. Basically it reflects back the beam. Not a problem with a reflector. I had one installed right on top of a radar on a mast.
 
On Sea Angle I have the RAYMARINE 4KW flush mounted on the roof with both the GARMIN and the RAYMARINE 'pucks' on the roof. The GARMIN is above the head, just aft of the interior windowed partician, and the RAYMARINE is directly opposite it on the port side roof.

I have yet to have a problem with either GPS unit.

Go for the KISS location. It will work.
