I figured it might be valuable to share my experience using a 1st gen Tacoma (96 model) V6 to pull a loaded 22-cruiser.

My over-all opinion so far is, if taken slow (50-55mpg top speeds) with plenty of space left between the cars around you, a Tacoma is an acceptable tow vehicle for a CD22. A heavier vehicle such as a Tundra or domestic super-duty would be better suited, my brother's 04 Ford super-duty diesel doesn't even know it's back there, but until "trade-up" day comes for me, I'll take it slow with my tacoma. The CD trailer does have surge brakes. I haven't been in a situation where they were really needed (I never let people rush me out there) but glad to know they're back there.

If this is worth anything: my 3.4L V6 gets 18mpg towing a 16 angler, and 15mpg pulling the 22-cruiser. (and 23mpg towing nothing)

I just changed out the manual trans fluid to high grade mobile 1 synthetic figuring that's the biggest strain on the truck right there.

If there's a thread addressing this issue elsewhere and wish to move my post over to it, please feel free. :)

Brenton-

Thats for the fill-in!

Lots of folks are using slightly (or more) undersized tow vehicles these days, mostly due to gas mileage concerns. We get questions all the time about whether a particular vehicle is big / capable enough to tow one or the other of the C-Dorys.

Right now, with the economic slowdown, there are lots of bargains available, both in boats and tow vehicles. Lots of folks are getting rid of extra vehicles and unnecessary luxury items, so big diesel and gas trucks seem to be in particular abundance, at least here in Redding.

Would be a good time to pick one up for an attractive price, except I don't want to have the extra expense, either! (5 cars, 3 boats, a motorhome, and a jet ski is over the top as it is!)

Sea wolf, you've got a beautiful boat (just checked out your album) very close to the 89 22-cruiser I just picked up. As I rolled past Shasta a few weeks ago towing the 16 home, I spotted a 16 cruiser in a parking lot on the East side of I-5, was that yours by chance? If not, there's another CD'er in your area :)

I might have some questions for you in the future regarding setting up my 22.

Not my 16, as I don't have one!

I'll be happy to answer any questions you have, of course!
