Add a little Diesel

To me, the OP sounded like a nice guy sharing something he found interesting. I sure did not feel that I was being asked to do the same, nor did I feel he was claiming the numbers were irrefutable proof. In fact, he was right up front that some would not agree with him. Then came the "scientific" and "engineered" responses. Seems to me that the OP and the responses all had valid points. Some just seemed to come off a bit critical, at least to me. Saying you'd wait for proof is one thing. Saying it does not work and causes damage, also without proof, is a bit different. Just my 2c's. I will go away for another 2 years now.

The American made four cylinder headed off to South Dakota on a fourteen hundred mile round trip, driving at the posted speed limit/s with most of the miles on intestates, at speeds between fifty five, sixty five, seventy and seventy five on cruise control.

Before Connie left town for her Aunts ninetieth birthday party in central South Dakota, I filled the car with the highest octane ethanol blend plus one half gallon of #2 diesel fuel.

Round trip, the vehicle averaged thirty four, point two miles per gallon (actual miles divided by gallons used).

Following the trip, we did not immediately add any more diesel with each fill up, to watch and monitor the results.

With each tank full the performance gradually, but slowly dropped back to the twenty nine, point five/seven/nine miles per gallon that we experienced when the vehicle was purchased (before adding diesel).

Then, I added a half gallon of diesel fuel and the milage jumped back to thirty four plus miles per gallon.

So every three or four fills (or when I remember or notice that the milage is slipping), I add two/three tents of #2 diesel and the milage either maintains itself or increases back over the thirty four miles per gallon range.

Obviously the terrain, percentage of in town to out of town milage, length of trip and road speed could and does affect the GPH calculations per tank full.

Amazingly, we can achieve better MPG at sixty five/ seventy five (on cruise control) than at fifty five which to me would have to do with gearing combinations etc.

This adding #2 diesel to the gas tank, in our family had been practised since the late forties, which by the way was always to reduce wear and lengthen engine life, without ever any thought about gas milage.

The gas milage subject came up as I observed that the added diesel did affect our gas milage on our early January trip to pick up our 19’ CD.

Now, I’m finding that this practice of adding diesel to the gas tank is not uncommon (to reduce engine ware and extend engine life).

By the way, Thank you Jon Ramos for your comments (above), I agree.

Please be advised that even though these simple observations may not be enough to perk your curiosity, please be advised that I did not make up or fabricate any part of this or any other subject that I write about, just found it interesting and assumed that others would also.

Have another great day in paradise.

Best regards,

Ron Fisher

Jon, it's not been 2 years! Your last one was in June 2011. Don't be a stranger, welcome back!

Interesting information on the diesel. Wonder if I should add gasoline to my 7.3L Northstar Diesel? Probably not...

I would wonder from the look of some these responses if some folks might be afraid to post something that they seemed to see as a possitive for fear of getting tied to the whipping post. I often wonder what the oil companies add to gasoline? I mean what a way to get rid of some toxic waste and get paid to do it. Dump a fifty five gallon drum of crap into a million gallon tank of gas who would know? Ron thanks for having the courage to post your findings. I'm going try putting some diesel in my lawnmower's engine it's going to be hard to document the possitive results this year as April Fools day has past but there's always next year. I mean just to pull someones chain.

Charlie, I have a very poor sense of time. Thanks for the welcome. We have not left the C-Dory/C-Brats family, just been busy with raising a family! Hope everyone here makes it a great day!

Hello Will-C,

Now, more than three years ago, when we were first trying to organise the first National Mississippi River C-Brat Gathering in Guttenberg, Iowa, there was one or two who apparently in their effort to be cute, really came off in a manor that is seldom but occasionally seen on this site.

Then like now, you wisely made comments that somewhat stopped the stupidity, thank you for doing that.

I really believe that the “No Rules - Just be nice!” concept has worked and sometimes all of us need the reminder that it does.

Best regards,

Ron Fisher

If it works great if it dosen't Oh Well. All I know is with the price of diesel these days it is real hard for me to put any in the tank of my truck, and it is an 03 Dodge with a 5.9 liter Cummins diesel.

Last Friday was the first day that our nineteen CD has been in the water for well over two years.

After the previous owner had hip surgery, he was having trouble getting in and out of the boat for launching etc., so the boat had been stored until sold/purchased.

Both tanks on the nineteen were about half full and we had been told that the gas had been treated with a stabilize.

I/we took samples of the gas, allowed the samples to set for a hour or so and looked for any signs of sedimentation which would indicate that the gas is or was breaking down.

So to start the process, there was three to four tents of a gallon of diesel put into each tank and then filled up the balance with regular gasoline.

The engine (Honda 90 four stroke) had been checked over, serviced and started six to eight weeks ago, so we knew it would run.

The engine fired off immediately and after a short worm up was idling very smooth but a little slow.

Long story short we had a great ride down river thirty five miles to Catfish Charlie’s Restaurant.

The motor performed beautifully, except, I did need to set up the idle before we left Charlie's to head home.

The previous owner had told me that the fastest the boat had ever run was twenty eight miles per hour (on his GPS), we were able to run flat out at thirty one (on our GPS).

As we go along I will regularly add diesel to every fill up (when convenient) and advise what happens as we go along.

Regards,

Ron Fisher
