accurate fuel gauges for portable tanks

Now that I have moved from a 22 to 16 cruiser, I have entered the world of portable tanks. I have Honda oem 6 and 3 gallon tanks. One came with the boat and the 3 gallon was new from the kicker on the 22. Both of them have gauges built into the filler caps, and neither one is accurate. Basically I know the tank is empty when the engine stops. Anyone have a solution? Also mine have the vent in the top of the gauges and the vents work fine. Question is; if I bought another tank do current govt regs allow for a fuel vent?

The gauges are basically a float on a spiral piece of metal. These are very simple and easy to "fix" if broken.
All fuel tanks have to have vent.

You can buy a replacement gauge which is also the cap and replace the old one if it is not repairable.
 
I have 3 - 5gal. tanks on my 16' bowrider. I under the bow cushion and 2 under the rear splashwell. I found that it was hard to see the gauges on the rear tanks so I bought the "see through" type. I don't know how well they work with straight gas, but with 2 stroke mixed gas you can see the level quite easily from the helm.

Please belive me when I say that I am not trying to be a smart ass, But they are portable so just pick them up and give a quick shake you should get a good idea how much is left in them.
