A new C-Dory line?

With the outlook of high gas prices is C-Dory ready for very fuel efficient displacement hull model? I'm thinking of the CD 22 cabin sitting on a stretched out double ended hull, pushed by a 10HP outboard. Hull speed of 7kts and fuel economy of 12-15 mpg should be possible.

Do you think there will be a market for this kind of boat in our future?
 
not sure about the market, but with the economy in it's current condition, how much discretionary income does c-dory have to invest in the research and development of a new product line? i would think, not much.

Thing is, the CD already dominates a niche market; it’s by far the most popular economical cruiser/fishing/recreation boat out there.
There’s already a multitude of economical hull displacement vessels available on the market today, I would think the current economical climate favors modals CD already has.

A multitude? I'm not aware of any that meet my description.
 
Looks like it. If their consumption figures are right, 20mpg at 5 knots, 12mpg at 6 knots and 7mpg at 7 knots... Pretty good, but no C-Dory.

Greg, it's got to go at least as fast as you go on your bike!! :lol:

As I've said before, this looks like a sailboat, sans sails and rig.

You can make one of these of your own by buying a used sailboat hull and removing most of the mast and boom, shortening the keel, and having a blast customizing the interior and outboard installation to your own liking.

Some sailboats feature retractable or shoal draft keels. Some have outboard motor wells that hide the outboard inside at the back of the cockpit and forward of the transom. You can also get a diesel or gas inboard, of course.

AND, lots of smaller, older sailboats (up to 28 feet) are really CHEAP right now. For $1,500-$5000 or more you can have a great platform to work with and build your own efficient cruiser on a reasonable budget.

This is the closest thing to what I'm describing, but it's not a production boat. I am not aware of a production boat that is like a C-Dory in it's cabin layout and gets that kind of mileage. If there is post it.

Also let me say that I'm only suggesting that C-Dory have a super economical displacement hull model available not a replacement.
 
I had some email correspondence with the Allweather folks some months ago, and they are out of production. It did not sound like they were interested in building any more, but I think there is a niche there.

Gregw, I like the concept, but would like to see a small diesel rather than an outboard.

Actually, that question has been answered without retooling. Simply slow down. On my 22 I can get 12 mpg running at 6 k with either the 8 hp kicker or the 70 hp Suzi.
If you can't resist dropping the hammer and blasting across the water, leave the main home on a stand in the garage. You will be 300+ lbs. lighter plus almost that much again on fuel, 40 gals X 7.3 lbs. ?

I ran my previous MacGregor 26 at around 6 k and got about 14 mpg with a Honda 7.5. But wait! I think I just hit on something....Pick up a Mac 26 and do a little nice, quiet sailing....totally beat the petro-giants!

Getting back to the search issue I have found the Google "advanced" search to work much better than the built-in C-Brat site search. Go to Google, click on advanced, and enter your search, but make sure you put www.c-brats.com in the site field. The one situation where the built-in search works better is when you are searching for a post from a specific member.

Yeah the numbers are good but your right it's not a C-Dory. Charlie, a boat would have to be 60 feet long to have a hull speed equal to my average speed on 2 wheel. (12 mph) :wink: It's hard to match the efficiency of a bicycle.

There is a Nimble Nomad at Hilton Harbor in Bellingham where we kept Daydream this past summer. Very cool looking, has a Honda 30 outboard. Curt, the guy who runs the place, says the owner only takes it out about a week a year, the rest of the time it just sits there. But it is way cool looking.

Shawn (user name "shogimac") who had the CD22 Tonie O bought the very last new Allweather boat, as I recall just after they went out of production. I think he took it to Alaska but I don't know how that went. It looks like Shawn's last post was in May 2008.

OK Steve, picture this boat stretched out long enough to have a standing headroom cabin. It would look great and with a tiny Yanmar it could get 12 mpg.

If C-Dory is not up for a new model, maybe Toland Marine needs a sister ship to their Marinaut 205. Same cabin on a longer double ended displacement hull.
