a little fishing, a little wind, a hard ride.

so yesterday was the last day of kings in the 9 and 10 areas. after this its just silvers until winter black mouth and I have not reeled one in yet. out of the few days on the water fishing this season I have had two kings in my boat but not on my rod, netted a 25 in my buddies boat but not my rod and a few skunking.

well yesterday i had the time to go and wanted that last chance king. So me and friend left yesterday at 7 am from Everett. coasties are calling for 10 to 15 raising to 25 LATE in the day. well we head out in the typical one to two footers with 2 to 3 around the tide rips and points. nothing I have not done before. I wanted to hit point no point and skunk bay as i had good report and it would be out of most of the wind from the south. So we get there with no problems and start fishing.

good news is I get hit by a 12 king right at the start and its on the brads cut plugs with the smell strips i have made and posted about. its wild so was released at the boat and off it goes. we where on lots of bait . Well it was the last hit for the day. the bait was broken up by dolphins. There was a lot of them out yesterday and they where chasing bait and maybe salmon?? right behind the boat. I have seen more dolphins in the sound this year then in the last 8. I see them on every trip and lots of them. so no more fish .

well the wind starts to come up and even thu we are in a protected area its blowing pretty good. we decide to head back as the forecast is wrong and the wind is building early. long story short it took over a hour to cross from PNP to possession bar before we could turn down wind and head north to Everett. here's a hi light of the action. I took this after we got out of the big stuff when I was to busy to turn the phone on. oh Oh I was doing 3 knots

a little wind and wave

Yeah Tom, I know what you mean about "jonesin" for Kings. I've been skunked this year; of course I hardly fished but still.

I remember thinking yesterday afternoon when the wind really kicked up here in DT Seattle, "Wow, I'm glad I'm not on the boat today." Looks like you had quite a ride.

I went out across the bar at Westport yesterday morning. I thought it would lay down a bit past the bar. I turned around between a couple of big waves a little past buoy 4 and headed back in. Very scary. I should have paid attention to the small craft warning. I've been in worse but this one could have been avoided by using common sense. On a bright note, it's been a good king year at Westport. Nothing of any size though. The biggest this year was 27. Most (15 plus fish were above 20 pounds) were around 22 to 25 pounds. We caught four silvers on Monday. Two 15s, one 14 and one 12 pound hen. I would rather put a big silver in the freezer over a king any day. I caught less than 10 silvers this year so I need to get back out there and make sure I have enough salmon to make it through the winter. I just use the kings for smokers.

Been there done that when I was told to and was a young SN on boat crew. It was "cool" when I was 20 and someone else was paying the boat maintenance bill. Now, in my mind, boating = fun which means warm sunny weather and light breezes and calm waters. Big waves only = fun if I have a surfboard and the water is 80 degrees and it is nice glassy swell at the beach. I enjoy a good fish dinner and catching fish, but not that much. Great video though on You Tube, looked like a wild ride and goes to show the fortitude of the C-dory.

Tom..great video, that hurt my back just watching it. I have never been out in that sort of weather, looks beautiful and kinda scary at the same time.Good luck with the silvers.Tug

I had PLANNED to spend my one day off out yesterday...until I checked the weather on Monday night. This just re-enforces the correctness of my decision.

you should have call i had a open seat.

Gee, thanks. Who needs lumbar discs anyway? I've heard they're over-rated. When you going again? I'd like to catch one of those silvers...er, coho....er, kings.....er....

You can see I know nothing about catching salmon.

Yeah I saw the forecast for the week and decided to try on monday night, and skip tuesday. I went out and did the exact same thing we tried last week or so, but to much better results. We ended up landing a 22,13, and 12 pounder. The 13 and 12 hit withing 4 minutes of each other. In the right conditions that spot has been amazing

Short and steep. Looks like you pounded pretty hard on some of the steep falls followed by a steep swell. I usually try to back off when I see the condition. I have not had to go to reverse yet but if you were only going 3 knts, reverse must have been tempting.

Its fun to have adventure yet like you did I head in when it gets rough! Our 15 - 25 nw winds can be over 30 at times in gusts. Not great conditions to boat in. I do run north for north winds so I don't pound so hard coming back in after the winds picked up.

No salmon here. I might try for a while this weekend as they are starting to show up in the Smith river.
