7.7 Quake in BC

I did hear some about this on the news. (NWCN) there have been 2 after shocks 5.5 and 4.8. Have not heard of any tsunami yet.

It was about 17 miles deep and slightly south of the south end of the Queen Charlotte's.

My email inbox was full of seismic and tsunami warnings when I checked the mail this morning. Whew -- a big one (7.7) but apparently little serious effect. The BC emergency warning systems were well tested, and news so far is that they responded well. Lucky this time that there were no serious tsunamis -- each quake is different and this one has apparently had little damage.

BUT - it is a reminder that those boating in the Pac NW should be alert to the threat (and proper steps to take whether aboard or ashore) when on their boats or in the area vulnerable to earthquakes. Be prepared -- "the Boy Scouts Marching Song" eh?
 
I was talking to one of my professional delivery skipper friend about this today. . He pointed out that there was some disturbance of both the ocean floor and coastline, which has not been resurveyed since the Alaska Quake of 1964. So keep your eyes open.

You are dead on the lack of surveying since the 64 earthquake and the notes on the charts attest to it. The amount of uplift in the Montague Island area is impressive. If you go back into the trees off the beach, you can find the pre-64 high tide line back 40 to 50 feet and 6 to 9 feet higher. The trees/alders growing in the old tidal flat are now around 35-40 years old so it is difficult to see from the water. You can imagine what a 6-9 foot uplift does for chart accuracy not to mention for size of the tsunami it generates.

On Vancouver Island we are are always keeping an ear open for the Big One and I was very disappointed with the Canadian response time for this quake. Seems I am not the only one as there will be a government inquiry. I assume anyone who lives in the PNW area has the alerts on their mobile phone and/or e-mail ? For Tsunami it comes from NOAA and for quakes from the US geological guys. There was a good sized aftershock in the Haida Gwaii last night and we got the alert in about 7 minutes.
