2011 Delta/Bay Extravaganza and Catalina Offshore Adventure

Dear C-Brats-

Welcome to the 10th Annual, Catalina Off-shore Adventure, on August 14 to August 20, 2011. Currently five (5) vessels are signed up for this Jimmy Buffett event as follows:

1. Jim and Kath on Pounder
2. John and Robbin on Dinner Belle II
3. Ron and Bill on Islander (a 35 foot “Duffy” Lobster Boat) (a former 22 foot C-Dory Owner)
4. David and Donald on Blue-Eagle
5. Joel and Susan on SEA3PO.

We hope several others will consider coming. If you plan to go, please place your name on the signup sheet as soon as possible.

This is a great event in a unique exotic setting. Hey all of you Pacific Northwest C-Dory nuts up there, how about a few of you coming down Interstate 5 and enjoying the Southern Latitudes for a nice change of pace?

We plan to meet at Marina Del Ray (MDR) on Sunday, late afternoon, August 14th. We will stay at MDR on Sunday evening at the guest dock and leave our trailers and trucks in MDR. Those in the group, who want to, usually go out to dinner together on Sunday night and we take the MDR ferry to a nearby restaurant.

We will proceed to Two Harbors on Monday morning, August 15th, leaving MDR at approximately 7:00 AM, and go as a group to Two Harbors, Catalina Island. When we get to Two Harbors we will obtain “string line” reservations close to shore, and together. We will coordinate this reservation on the way over via communication on VHF Channel 69.

Most of us will return from Two Harbors on early Saturday morning, August 20st. Again, we will leave Two Harbors at approximately 7:00 AM on this Saturday.

On Monday night we will have group pot luck on the beach. Kath and I will bring for everyone the meat to barbeque. Each boat should plan on bringing a dish to share with the group. If you can, please indicate what dish you will bring Monday night to the group BBQ. Everyone is to bring their own drinks to the beach party Monday night.

During the week we may have a fishing trip over to Santa Barbara Island (and an associated victory fish fry), a day sightseeing trip to Avalon, a scuba diving trip, a kayak excursion along the shore, and a bicycle trip on the island. For many boaters, it will just be relaxing to sit on their C-Dory’s and watch the sun rise and set and enjoy the perfect 75 degree, flip-flop, shorts, and t-shirt, weather. On Friday night, for those that want to, we usually have a group dinner together at the Harbor Reef Restaurant.

Many folks eat hearty breakfasts over at the Galley Grill in the morning, and most eat light lunches and dinners on their own boats. Often times there will be mid-afternoon drinks over at the Harbor Saloon or the Banning House Lodge. Many boats usually host a happy hour during the week on their boats.

Be sure to bring a good functioning tender, as a big part of this event is getting to, and from, the dingy dock, and cruising around to all the other boats and visiting. Also, bring quarters for the pay showers, another key to Island life!

More later,

Jim and Kath

I would love to go --- but--- since I have been working in Avalon I may not make it.
Yesterday I saw a great show just outside Avalon Harbor--- the dolphins were chasing the flying fish-- what a site!!! Dolphins were doing front and back flips trying to catch the fish in the air, as the fish were "flying" 35'-40'.
Before I could get my camera out, they were gone.

Bossa Nova is in. Almost 100% certain. I'll probably come across from San Pedro and meet the group at Two Harbors. I might have to leave a day early at the end of the week.

I joined the Event Signup, but it wasn't clear to me that this is the sign up sheet you mentioned, as the number of members there is less than the number you listed as going. Probably just a detail.

-Jeff

Thanks Jeff for signing up. Two boats that are coming (Dinner Belle II and Islander) do not use this site so they are not on the list but they are coming.

Sincerely,

Jim

Hi Jim,

I am looking forward to this trip. Bill has got his tickets, and we are looking forward to bike riding, kayaking and maybe even the zip line!

Dear All:

This posting is an update on the 10th Annual Catalina Off-Shore Adventure, starting August 14th, only approximately one (1) month from now! Below is a list of those Brats (Dogs) currently signed up for this C-Dory gathering:

1. Jim and Kath, Pounder
2. John and Robbin, Dinner Belle II
3. Ron and Bill, Islander
4. Jeff, Bossa Nova
5. Kent and Marcia, Marcia Jane
6. Jon, Gypsy River
7. Russell and Theresa, Whale Watcher
8. Joel and Susan, SEA3PO
9. David and Donald, Blue-Eagle.

This turnout with nine (9) vessels is already bigger than we thought it would be this year. This event, unlike the Delta and Bay Extravaganza, is not size limited. If any other folks, new comers or old comers, want to join in, please sign up now.

Sincerely,
Jim

I can only say I'm tentatively coming. Seems my company thinks I have more important work to do in Korea for a month, just happens that I'd be landing at LAX on the 20th of August. We'll see, the trip isn't fully in the can yet.

For those who haven't done this trip, it is to die for, trust me!

Steve:

Thanks for checking in. We hope you can come, but we understand the need to fulfill work commitments. That Korea trip sounds exciting. Let us know if you have a schedule change that allows you to come, then I will bring my scuba equipment!

Sincerely,

Jim

I just got an invite to the Newport Boat Party that they have on the Island ....and it is the 19 (Friday) thru 21 (Sunday).... cost $50 but Newport provides all the meat and drinks...seminars andNewportt boat demos..... Isn't Newport a dealer for C-Dory ??

OK, Asian trip canceled/postponed, so I'm now on the list. Probably will arrive mid-afternoon Monday, I have an errand to do early that morning. Will also be leaving Friday instead of Sat due to out of town visitors arriving at LAX Sat morning.

Jim, yes, bring your scuba gear, I'll dust off mine (literally) and bring also. Hopefully my daughter will make it too, not 100% sure yet, she's moving into her first house with hubby in 2 weeks, might still be unpacking...

Steve-

That is great that you are now coming! It would also be good to have your wonderful daughter along if she can come. You will also be there for the Monday night BBQ!

I will definitely bring my scuba stuff now. I was not going to bring it unless you came!

Sincerely,

Jim and Kath

We are not going to make it this year....just too much work not finished here at the cabin... winter came late and projects just got delayed.

Plus the diving this year has been really busy....brought up a sinker on Monday, spent Tuesday drying it out and getting it running again...no damage...but I bet he thinks to change the outdrive bellows when it starts leaking next time.

Joel and Susan:

So sorry that you will not be able to make it this year. I understand how busy people are in "retirement" these days. Just crazy! I think I will keep working for a while! Anyway, I understand your cabin projects and the late winter.

The best to you both.

Jim and Kath

Do we have a list of what folks are bringing for the pot luck on Monday eventing the 14th? And how many people will be on the trip? I'm trying to decide on what to bring and how much for the pot luck.
Jon

Hi Jon.

Thanks for checking in. Yes we need to firm up our Monday night BBQ. There are still nine vessels as Steve on Dora Jean will replace Joel and Susan on SEA3PO.

Plan on approximately 18 folks at the BBQ. Right now Kath and I are bringing the meat. Russell and Theresa are bringing a corn salad.

Here are some suggestions that one could volunteer for (or any other dishes);

1. Cheese/crackers, and chips for pre dinner
2. Macaroni or potato salad or baked beans
3. Corn on cobb in aluminum foil to put on BBQ
4. Lettuce salad with dressing
5. Garlic bread
6. Gallon of vanilla ice cream from store with topping.

All, please sign up for your food dish. This event is now two weeks away!!

Sincerely,

Jim and Kath

I just found out we have a schedule change at work and I'll need to move my vacation a week, so Bossa Nova will miss the group gathering this time. Sorry about that.

I was there for a week earlier in July, so I'm doing fine boating-wise. On my moved week, I might go back to Catalina or I might do the Sacramento Delta trip I've been trying to work in.

Have a good time at Two Harbors. There's a reef by a red buoy just northeast along the coast from the Isthmus about half a mile. It was producing fish while I was there. I was catching Calico Bass and Barracuda along the coast from Emerald Bay down to White's Landing on the way to Avalon. Trolling along near shore mostly, or stopping when the fish finder lit up and doing some casting and jigging. I was using Rapalas and the locally popular lead head plastic swimbaits, both with a little 1 inch strip of cut squid hooked on. The squid strip helps a lot. I like the Rapalas because I can tell by the rod end wiggle when the lure gets fouled by weeds or kelp and needs cleaning. I don't get that feedback with the plastics so I have to check them more often. And I found a big difference by switching to the new Florocarbon invisible line, at least for a leader for the last couple feet before the lure. I think I'll re-spool all my reels with that stuff. P-line makes some called Floroclear that's not as expensive as some other brands. It's a hybrid line with a normal core and the florocarbon coating, instead of the expensive stuff all the way through. That works because it's the optical match at the line/water interface that matters. Whatever - I've seen it make big improvements for me in fresh water in the past and now in salt water on this trip. I'm switching over.

A one pound box of squid from the store there will last a few guys the whole week. And this time I learned to use scissors to cut the little strips. WAY easier than messing with a knife...

-Jeff
