2010 Delta/Bay Extravaganza and Catalina Adventure

Here's the Two Harbors Boater'sGuide in PDF:

I'll take this moment to thank Jim and Kath for their work and patience in bringing this event together. Appreciate that our Catalina Adventure wouldn't, couldn't just happen by itself. It takes a special, stubborn but gentle and Kath woud say strikenly handsome old cuss (but not too old) to herd us C-Dory C-Dogs into a gathering. Be sure to show your thanks when we're there... let's take turns cleaning the windsheild of Pounder once a day!

Hi,

Sorry I haven't checked in for a while. My next few weeks are working out OK for three or four day weekends, but not for entire weeks off I guess. I expect I'll miss the gathering at Two Harbors next week, unless it's to just drop by for a day or two. Thanks for thinking of me.

I was out there for a week a month ago and it was very nice. We SCUBA dived all the way around Ship Rock outside Two Harbors (among other things) and that was a great dive. TONS of fish. The most I've ever seen. The rock wall is very steep and anchoring is a little tricky. If it's not too windy you might want to just tie off to the kelp on the west side of the rock and leave someone to keep an eye on the boat's position. I did that while fishing there later on. It was a good one tank dive to drop down to 50 ft and slowly circle the entire rock. It was 63 degrees at the surface and 59 at 50 ft in mid-July. Great visibility.

From the LOG article linked below: "Calico bass fishing has been very consistent for anglers targeting the kelp line along the front of the island, and the zone from Frog Rock to Long Point has been a great place to start. These fish are all in the 2- to 5-pound range.

Schools of bonito have been reported breezing around the area with a few yellowtail in the mix from 8 to 15 pounds. Nice halibut up to 35 pounds have been caught recently on the island, showing for the angler targeting the sandy beaches and coves along the front of the island as well as on the back side inside the squid grounds."

Here's a chamber of commerce type article on Catalina... interesting for those of you coming from afar or not familiar with Catalina.

Here's an article on growing crime in Catalina... interesting to those like me who dream of living in Avalon. The permanent population on the island is largely Hispanic, so this type of press and police response causes a lot of stress and controversy, especially in the politics and governing of Avalon.

and here's an article about another type of masked bandits, stowing away on boats heading for Catalina and yes, there are racoons in MdR.

Merry already has our morning planned. We will wait outside King Harbor Monday morning about 7:30 and take photos and video as the convoy arrives from Marina del Rey. We will then get in line for Two Harbors. We need to come back home on Tuesday morning, so we're not sure if we should get in the string line or a seperate mooring.

Phil,

Can I strap you (in scuba gear) to the bottom of C-Pup and as I putter around Harbor Reef, you tap the hull when you see a white sea bass or yellowtail so I know where to drop my line? !

Phil-

Thanks for checking in. We will meet up with you on the way over to Two Harbors. Best to get on the string line with the rest of us, regardless of when you leave.

Sincerely,

Jim

We made it home from our shortened version of the Catalina Adventure. It was wonderful meeting and eating with the group yesterday. Some of the highlights included dolphins during the crossing.

:D What a great cruise! Once again, Captain Jim and Kathy were great organizers and fun was had by all.

I'm pretty sure that my little Honda outboard can be saved and hopefully John's wrist and ribs are OK.

The Marcia Jane stayed one more day in order to see the sea battle that takes place a few miles off of Catalina, as the Lane Victory (a WWII transport) discovers a spy onboard and comes under attack by German planes. All is well as the Lane Victory's guns fend off the attack and the American Air Force comes to the rescue.

If you Google the "Lane Victory", you can see the history of this San Pedro based ship and actually see clips of the battles on YouTube.

Well, the ship rounded Long Point about 1:00 p.m and we followed it for a few miles. The ship was under attack at about 1:30 and we got a great view. Unfortunately the water was so rough that pictures were just not possible.

We're glad we stayed an extra day AND had no tickets when we reached Marina del Rey on Sunday!

Thanks again for all who cruised with us and contributed to this very special event. :thup

Saw the picture of the "tow". More to the story? Great pictures, sometimes I wish we lived back on the left coast, but not often...

Thanks to those who attended the Catalina Offshore Adventure. This includes John and Robbin, Brent and Dixie, Steve and Melinda, Kent and Marcia, Phil and Merry, Borris and Judy, David and Donald, and Keith. At times there were nine (9) C-Dory's at the event, which was another great turnout.

As always, it is not the beautiful destination, it is not the 32 NM journey to the West end of the Island, but rather it is the people who made the effort to attend that was most important. Thanks to all those above who made this such a special week in paradise.

Sincerely,

Jim and Kath
