2009 HONDA BF50EFI

We are powering a new 16 Cruiser. Always thought we would buy a Honda when the time came. However, my father runs larger outboards on the Oregon Coast and saw a lot of electronic controller issues on new Hondas last summer. Some ECU's being replaced multiple times. Our dealer sells both Honda and Suzuki. The dealer is pretty hot on Honda. Any thoughts?

I've never owned a Honda but love my Suzuki DF90 EFI. If you search the threads, most people agree that the new 4-stroke fuel-injected engines are all good. As well as the new technolgy 2-stroke E-Tecs.

As for Suzuki, the only real downside I've heard is that the dealer network is not a big as the others. However, you mentioned your dealer sells Suzi's so that's not a problem.

Just my $.02

We have a 2003 Suzuki 50 & 6. Never had a hiccup on either. Lot of folks in Juneau swear by Honda outboards. Either will be an excellent choice.

The Suzuki has higher alternator output, double overhead cam and larger displacement.

We've been really happy with the Suzuki 40 and 50 series.

Not according to the websites:

Honda BF50EFI alternator = 22 amps

Suzuki DF50 = 18 amps

I believe the CD 16 (esp. the cruiser) is very sensitive to weight in the stern. These boats were originally designed around a 40 horse 2-stroke. Weight of your engine should be a fairly major part of your decision IMHO, and is absolutely critical if you ever plan to add a kicker. Best, Mike.

Ill chime in a little . The Suzuki historically has been a GREAT motor . All the new EFI Hondas are really good , the growing pains are probably done with and Honda and Suzuki will always back their products . We haven't rigged the new Honda EFI 50 yet , but its a little lighter in weight , and if it performs like the new EFI 90 in relation to the old carb 90 , it will be a great choice. There are more deals to be had with Suzuki ,as they [40 and 50] have been around longer . Just some observations.

That's good to know, because when I checked the Honda website yesterday, the number was lower than the Suzuki.

Got my first honda in 99 a 50hp. ran it pretty hard for 9 years in mostly saltwater did all the service myself replaced the impeller once toke it to the shop once and had the three carbs synchronized, never had any problem with it at all and that the reason i went to the honda 90 and honda 8 on loose nut I like the the HONDA

Well everyone, thanks for all the good information. I knew it would not be a black-&-white thing. I agree there is no wrong decision here. Not sure if there is even a "best" choice. We are going with the Honda, based primarily on weight and dealer network. Again, many thanks.

For those of you that are interested in 50 hp engines for the 16 ft or twins for the 22 and 23 c-dorys .There is a nice article in Aug 09 Trailer boats magazine . I think the merc and honda come off the winner. The mercs seem to win anyway good reading
