2003 Suzuki BF90 Problems

While on our latest cruise on the waters of northern Lake Huron our faithful Suzuki 90 started acting up and the engine warning light on the tachometer
came on along with the warning beeps. Sadly, we cut our cruise short and loaded up and headed for home to do further analysis.

The batteries were removed and taken to a shop for testing. Both batteries were in good shape and were put back on board. The engine warning continued to come on and according to the analysis the MAP sensor 2 - pressure direct passage , was malfunctioning.

Removed the sensor and cleaned it with air pressure and a fine wire. Still flashing a warning when returned to the engine.

Our nearest Suzuki dealer is 100 miles away and we have no knowledge of their skills in working with marine engines.

Questions:
1. Is the engine warning system dependable?
2. Are there any further tests that could be done?
3. Should I order the $200+ replacement sensor?

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

Check out previous posts in the forum and on the internet for problems with Suzuki engines of that era. Could be corrosion in the exhaust system due to Suzuki using dissimilar metal connectors.

I hope its not that but good luck.

I echo what Gene said about the corrosion issues on this vintage motor. I was an unfortunate victim last year despite regular maintenance and care. The motor was virtually flawless for 11 years and then the corrosion problem reared it's ugly head. I didn't even get any error codes on the tach, it just started dying at low speeds after being run at higher speeds for long periods and starting became harder.

I would suggest seeking some advice on the Suzuki Outboard Forum. It's a great resource and there are guys on the site who really know their stuff and are very helpful. They will help with error codes and symptoms and you can also use the search function.

Horrors! I have a 2004 df70. Kind of disconcerting haveing a motor with 450 hrs being referred to as a "vintage motor of that era" !!! Got my fingers crossed.

Sorry Vern. I should have worded it "a motor of that vintage".

Oh and btw, your DF70 is not one of the motors of "that vintage" that has documented corrosion issues. These motors would be the DF90, DF115 and DF140, which all had the same block, from I believe 2002 - 2007.

Well if you know the sensor is bad I would replace it it first before going to look for other problems.

One of the pit falls of engine diagnostics is looking for a know problems and not the real problems. Its a" well I heard that these motors have problem A, so that must be it" every motor is different and should be treated that way.

That said I would check out your motor for what others have said about the corrosion. Just dont stop there or think that has to be it.

I had a 1995 ford ranger. I had problems with it starting and staying running. Took it to a ford shop. " Oh thats the 02 sensor we will just drop another one in" That did not fix the problem but the mechanic assumed that it was a bad sensor from the part department. " Oh yeah we get bad one out of the box some times" Well three sensors later my truck is still not running. Another guy in the shop comes over and instead of assuming its the sensor he starts at the beginning- spark fuel air- and finds out its a fuel pump. They tried to charge me for the 4 hours guy #1 wasted not doing his job. they did not get paid for anything but the fuel pump replacement time that the 2nd guy did. Lesson learned it that past performance is not a indication of current or future performance.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. After consultation with Wefings and a few other folks I've ordered the MAP sensor 2.

By the way, It's a DF90......

Wish me luck.
